While that is true, you cropped off an important part of my post.
Cleaning the engine is QUITE different than cleaning the interior or polishing the body.

Perhaps to you, but not to others of us. We keep the whole car clean. You will rarely find a car with a clean engine and the other stuff dirty.

A clean engine makes a huge difference when selling your car. I got top dollar for my Scion.

Ditto for our Camry that was pretty rough before I gave it a good scrubbing inside and out.

Sometimes when I see a dirty engines, the psychological effect that gives me sometimes, when i want to work on them, is to either referred the vehicle to some other persons.
There's something about working on clean engines.

When I look at used cars I like to see some dirt. If the engine is too clean it’s like someone is trying to hide something.

I suppose this might make sense if the car is a total hooptie, but if the rest of the car matches the engine and it's a private sale, I'd have no concerns. And, if the owner has complete maintenance records, that's a big plus.

I used to work as a lot boy at a dealer and we prettied up a lot of crap vehicles, so I'm familiar with that game. Every used car that comes through a dealer today gets the spray and shine.

Take the car on long test drive with some highway speeds and then leave running upon return while you check out the rest of the car, ask the owner questions, etc. If you don't see or smell anything by then, it's probably legit.

Would this apply to the rest of the car? Week old barf from little Billy, spilled ice cream on a carpet, etc.? :)

I think you're right in some cases.

When I keep my engine clean, I also can see leakages faster. For me, its just been a habit I have and have always done it. I also clean my wife's and son's engine about every 2 months.

Have you considered spraying the whole engine with tire cleaner and letting that do the job for you?

I don't think tire cleaner will do much for oil and grease.
    The MAKE spray engine cleaner.

The cleanest part of my car is always the engine compartment, since I really prefer not to get dirty whenever I work around there.
