I searched the threads and couldn't find this answer, so possibly the Prius Guru's can shed light on this.

I have a '04 Prius that has sat for well over a year with the traction battery discharged to the point where it will not start. My understanding is the 12vdc battery fires up the ICU, ECU and sub computers as well as relays, pumps and electric circuits. If the 12v battery is strong and firing up the computers, is it possible to turn the crankshaft with an external motor, such as in a table saw with a 110v motor and belt, so the internal combustion engine starts and runs, thus generating electricity from MG1 to charge the traction battery back to a usable voltage?? Is this theoretically possible or am I pipe dreaming?

    Thanks!

It's theoretically possible but I've never heard of anyone actually getting it to work.

The trick is in controlling your external starting motor so that it actually operates at the exact moment the car is attempting to start the engine. If the timing isn't perfect, the computer will probably decide that something went wrong, and honestly I don't know what sort of error it might give.

I won't say that it can't work, just that it's probably harder than rigging up a charger for the traction battery and waiting.

idk, the engine and tranny kinda work in concert.

what would be the point of starting the engine if you're going to have to fix/replace the battery anyway?

There is a HV Battery charger, usually the Dealer does not have it, they need to request it from the Toyota Regional Office.

So you could have it towed to the Dealer and wait some weeks. When done, the Battery may well be unrecoverable.

No Battery anywhere likes not being charged. Sorry.

Might be cheaper to buy just the prolong charger at that point. The charger and cable alone is 409 dollars. I don’t see a tow and dealer service being less than that.

Since he’s in Napa, there is a local option;).

We actually have a spare Gen2 harness as part of our Prolong equipment kit:).

Hey man I gotta ton of tools, and politics takes a back seat to helping people. I’m all about helping young people fix cars.
Plus I seem to learn something new every day here. I enjoy learning something new. It’s like a hobby. There is a joy in learning something new.

I know @Grit and @w84me would be in:).

Maybe we’d get a new crew together (y).

I really don’t have a decent place to work from. Wish I did but I own a quite small home. It’s almost paid for though.

If one were to come up to one of your repair party’s what would be a list of tools to bring to help? I have many including a smaller air compressor and an older earthquake impact wrench.

Cool. When I retire in about 6 years I’m gonna sell my house and move up to Eureka area. I’ve kinda liked it up there for a long time. Never been a recorded temperature above 89 degrees.
