@youdiejoe So how's this thing shaking out? Head gasket? Engine swap? File off the VIN and push into the LA river?

Just got the word from @Avi's Advanced Automotive , a leaking head gasket. Avi will be doing the work in the next week or so.

Here is his test video for my car:

Before I saw the video, I was about to say that a drop in coolant is to be expected after servicing the egr cooler.

No update yet, business is good for @Avi's Advanced Automotive he is finishing up another head gasket in front of me, plus I use another car for my daily driver so I'm not in a huge hurry.

Some background, this car was going to be a graduation gift for my son, but he has asked that we NOT buy him a car as gift. He doesn't want to own a car and prefers to use alternatives like public transportation, bikes/scooters and good old fashion walking. Living in Los Angeles this is very doable and I'm honestly very proud of him for taking this stance. I drive an electric, I was a 2007 Prius driver prior to going fully electric and thought this 3rd gen would be a good introductory car for him.

I'll finish the head gasket repair on the car and will put it back on the market to sell, with the EGR cleaned, new shocks/struts and brakes, upgraded the navigation unit to CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights, and so on... I was setting it up to be a good first car to last him several years. Now with all that I've done plus Avi's 36 month / 36k warranty on the engine work, it should make for a good car for anyone.

I have been trying to convince @SFO that it is a good business opportunity. Especially in our area.

Most of those head gaskets may be blowing due to overheating, due to clogged egr's?

According to your theory, a clogged EGR should cause elevated combustion temperatures and therefore, detonation. The detonation should then damage the head gasket.

But I have never heard a Prius engine detonate...

    After repair update:

Sorry I forgot to come back and update after @Avi's Advanced Automotive (Hybrid Fix) finished the work on my 2010. It's running great! I've put roughly 1000 miles on it since the work was done, with no issues at all. Still getting 50+ MPG. If you are looking for a hybrid mechanic in the greater Los Angeles area @Avi's Advanced Automotive (Hybrid Fix) should be your first call.
