"Just to be safe......" HE should not mess with it.
If one of those covers is damaged it might mean a new battery.
But since it is 14 years old, that might not be a bad thing.

Anyway, that does not change the fact that not ALL batteries are "maintenance free".

Little off subject but a good story and ending. I took my wife’s Prius v in for service while she was out of town. When I got home and parked it but didn’t noticed that they had turned on a dome light . So now it’s parked for 7 days and she comes home and we try’ to start it and of course it was dead. We were able to start the car by jumping it. That’s when I saw the dome light was on. Tried to charge the battery but it would not hold a charge. It was a 2 year old optima yellow top 12v battery. They have a 3 year warranty. When I bought it with a promotion it cost $125. Retail then was $184. Retail now is $224. Luckily I still had the receipt and went to where I bought it 2 years ago and they replaced it at no charge. That made my day.
