    I would very much like to know the total, combined thermodynamic efficiency of using the ICE during a cruise section to charge up the HV battery like that. Anyone with data?
    My guess is that the steady-speed ICE operation with no starts, stops, or warm-up periods would result in a high combined efficiency as long as the set speed of the road trip keeps the Atkinson cycle in an efficient part of the power band.

    the 0P's linked article corroborates what you feel & think about electric cars. Namely, people who don't own an EV presume there aren't enough chargers around, but seldom, if ever actually check - where they might actually find out, "hey look at that - there they are". Plus, some EV's actually build databases right into their screens, & even calculate & recommend which ones you can reach along your projected route. Unfortunately, many manufacturers seem to have a disdain for their own electric vehicles, trying to get you into another vehicle instead. Since over ½ of the profits of a dealership come from service, & electric cars need so little of it, I'm sure that could be one reason.
    have you ever downloaded an app that shows where all the Chargers are, you might be surprised.
    See, that's what I don't get ... even out in the boonies, where you could average 70 mph for all six hundred miles, that would be eight hours of driving. Why would any manufacturer want to boast about range that would blow out most people's bladder, unless of course the owner has a catheter. And if you had to stop at the three or four hour mark anyway, they're going to have a gas station there.

    again, that's what's ironic. People who never tried an Eve will say, " I don't think that would work for meeeee" - even though they never tried - or at least investigated through the various software programs how many Chargers and RV parks there are along 90% of their routes. That's why you never see posts about, i've checked & there are no Chargers around me anywhere. There may be a few I suppose.
    These are the folks who never came out west in the early 1800s because, "oh I don't think that your Conestoga wagon will get me there". Thank God there were a few risk-taking adventurers out there or we might all still be living on the European continent. Whose mother here didn't try to get them to eat something that they thought they would hate, & yet now they love it. Then again, maybe you will hate it, but hey, at least you tried.

    there are a few threads on this. no actual testing data that i recall, and toyota dent publish anything.
    unfortunately, there are too many variables in the real world, but most agree that is is inefficient to some extent, and 65mph seems to be the sweet spot for the most efficiency

    Never died & actually made retirement.... which was a surprise. Now, I have time to live, so I take the back road. Takes twice as long? I make sure I take four or five times longer. & look at that. I'm still alive.

    I just went on a trip to Niagara Falls and couldn’t access a single charging opportunity (not even L1) some CCS on the tollways but no L2

    As an aside here is my area

    You have my sympathy. Owning a BMW i3-REx, well my experiments have shown that the CCS chargers leave a lot to be desired in both access and costs. It was the SuperCharger network that sold me on the Model 3.

    Lots of chargers building across the country. Its easy to make money on CCS electric charging, when you charge 5 to 10 times more than the local price of electricity. Chargers are easily vandalized, not durable, not protected from careless drivers & not weather resistant. Let my Costco VISA or other regular cards access all electric chargers. What a hamstrung charging un-free enterprise system! Having to call an unhelpful company operator at 2AM in the morning to get a charger working properly (or not) is the definition of late night stranding.

    Closer to 50 mph in the real boonies. Twisty turny roads, hills, side roads, etc.

    once a car like a Model S (that's their only version now) hits 50mph & below average speeds - turning on other variables, range dynamics change too.

    [/QUOTE] ok yea it IS a bit pricey . . . but there are a couple folks manufacturing tesla to J1772 adapters. Anyone know of ANY EV or PHEV that charges faster than the tesla (HPWC) high power wall charger? of course not - turning on how they're wired, they can deliver-over 19kW's ... almost 1mile /minute, if the car can handle it. So ... get one of these bad boys, & you just assured your self you have a whole lot more potential locations to recharge . . . . regardless if our ride only charges @ 3kW's or 6kW's. Support these poor folks already!

    Pricey . . . but it's WAY better than getting stranded.

    feel smug if you want ~ there are still some places you'd better think of carrying a jerry can . . . or 2. Because the stop may not be open when one turns around ... or, there just closed for holiday, or outa gas. (call ahead)

    I’ve done Highway 50 in Nevada going both ways. Less than 3/4 of a tank, no problems. 600+ miles is a lot of range. 551 miles through Canada recently and didn’t have to buy Canadian gas. Had a gallon left in the tank when I filled.
