I recently bought a new Toyota Aqua which is a 2017 model manufactured in 2018. It came without the factory stereo and i am buying an aftermarket stereo.

I am having trouble identifying the connectors that are present in the car. I have managed to identify 4 out of the seven available cables but i do not know what the other 3 are . I have attached pictures of the connectors hoping someone can help me out. I might have wrongly identified the connectors so i am open to any input.

Several of the connectors are also found on Prius c cars built for sale in the U.S. and Europe; you’ve probably already identified these:
    • The two larger connectors with 10 and 6 positions arranged in a “U” shape, are for +B and ACC power supply, ground, speakers, and illumination. Their pinouts are common to many Toyota vehicles.
    • The connector with 28 positions in two rows supports several functions, but on cars built for sale in Japan, I think only the steering wheel switch connections, terminals 21 and 22, may be used. If your connector has only two wires, that’s what they are.
The other connectors are specific to cars built for sale in Japan. I don’t have complete documentation, but here are some educated guesses:
    Terminal 4: CANH
    Terminal 5: CANL
    • The connector with five positions in your photo 169655_temp4cj.png, if it has four wires attached, is probably for miscellaneous signals, with the following pinout:
    Terminal 1: PKB (Parking Brake)
Terminal 2: IG (IG Power Supply)
Terminal 3: SPD (Vehicle Speed Signal)
    Terminal 5: REV (Reverse)
    • The connector with four positions in your photo 169654_temp4cj_1.png is probably for the rear view camera, if equipped, with the following pinout:
    Terminal 1: Video +
    Terminal 2: Power Supply
    Terminal 3: Video –
    Terminal 4: Ground

You don’t have to connect all of the connectors, of course, if the aftermarket stereo doesn’t work with the signals they provide.

Something's not adding up... I recall that the glovebox terminal with analog aux in and USB jack splits into two harnesses, with the aux going into the 28-pin and the USB having its own 4-terminal connector.

Not near my notes but I'll look again later.

There are several differences between Prius c cars sold in the U.S. and Europe and Aqua cars sold in Japan, where a blank panel, CD player, and several navigation systems are available as dealer-installed options. See the Audio Visual & Navigation Catalogue (PDF, in Japanese) for the current model.

Even with navigation systems such as the NSZT-W66T, the 28-position connector is attached with a 4-position adapter (08606-00120), and there’s no equivalent of the 24-position connector found on the U.S. model.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the reply. The car is in fact a Japan model. I did some digging and came up with similar conclusions for some of the pins. I found a harness for the rear camera in Australia that converts the native plug to an RCA (The image for the 4 Pin Camera Adapter for Toyota | Retains Reverse Camera | APVTY04 can be found in the file attached).
I also got a harness for the steering wheel control. The connector has two wires like mentioned above.. The Axxess AX-TOY28SWC. The Stereo im going for is designed for Toyota so it has a harness for the antenna and both the U style connectors(The Atoto A6 PRO for Toyota). It is the other two connectors im not sure of. namely these two as mentioned by Elektroingenieur. Im still new so not too sure how to quote or tag a person yet.

What is a CAN bus connection?
The car came with something that looks like a dash cam. It has lane assist and breaking assistant, distance checking for traffic to avoid collision, auto headlight adjusting for night time. can i assume that the same thing can be used as a dash cam and possibly be used via the connection you mentioned below.

I am also new at this whole car stereo thing so not sure what you meant by the aftermarket not supporting signals. I was under the impression they were standard. as long as you can connect them up they would work.

Thanks for all the valuable help and info.

    You’re most welcome.
CAN is the Controller Area Network (Wikipedia article), a digital communications system that connects many of the car’s computers. On some models, the navigation system can display vehicle information, such as the status of the hybrid system, and customize vehicle settings, using messages sent and received over the CAN bus.
Not necessarily. The CAN bus is a good example: there are standards for the electrical interface, but the bus addresses and messages are proprietary to Toyota. Unless an aftermarket system has been programmed to work with these, there’s no use connecting it to the CAN bus, even if it has provisions for such a connection.

The simple signals, such as those for reversing or the parking brake, are more likely to work.
Probably not, which may be why Toyota sells several models of dashcam (“drive recorder”) in Japan; see page 16 of the AVN catalog I linked in post #4. The built-in camera’s resolution is typically quite low, and the video is processed internally, with no documented way to access the live signal.

So it i would assume i will not be using these extra two connectors unless the stereo supports them. I was also wondering if maybe one of them was a navigation connector ubt that may not be the case. is there any way for me to know.

You need one of these for the Aqua....

Correct; just secure them out of the way, where they won’t rattle or be damaged.
The most important connection that hasn’t been mentioned would be for the GPS (GNSS) antenna. For the Toyota navigation systems sold in Japan, this antenna is also a dealer-installed option, part number 08609-00010, with connectors that don’t look anything like those in your photos. Here’s an auction with pictures:

    【新品】☆TOYOTA☆トヨタ純正用品☆フィルムアンテナ☆最新☆未使用08609-00010送料無料☆フィル厶、配線一体タイプ☆前型08544-00660の後継品です の落札情報詳細| ヤフオク落札価格情報 オークフリー

If the car hasn’t had a navigation system installed, I wouldn’t expect it to have this antenna, either.
Indeed. As noted above, the connectors on the Aqua and Prius c are different, so you need the wiring diagram in the Electronic Technical Manual (電子技術マニュアル) disc series for the Aqua (アクア), which is issued only in Japanese, as far as I know. You might ask the importer of the car if they could sell you one.

Another source would be a Yahoo! Japan auction seller; search for 電子技術マニュアル NHP10 on auctions.yahoo.co.jp. You may need to use a buying service, such as buyee.jp, since many sellers prefer not to ship outside of Japan. Check the edition and dates carefully; I’d suggest SC20L7J from November 2017 or SC20L8J from April 2018.

My Stereo has an inbuilt amp and is designed for toyota vehicles so i am assuming i may not need it. The haeness it comes with plugs into the stereo an connectors directly. unless i want to use the harness instead

Hi Guys, so i got my stereo finally. and it comes with a harness that allows me to connect directly to my antenna and the other two connectors for toyota. Can i just hook up the stereo and test it since i dont have any wires to match for now (i am waiting for my rear camera harness to do the the cnnections all together.). Is there anything i should do before just plugging it in. i was checking online about installing radios and have seen people disconnecting their battery and taking some other precautions.

Should i do the same even though its pretty straight forward and just plugging it in .

I recommend disconnecting the battery during installation. It's not difficult. I would suggest doing the wiring work in two phases- whatever you have today, then go back and do the camera later.

Making temporary connections with less than proper insulation & strain relief is a great way to screw up and burn a fuse or worse.

Also a decent idea to use a meter and do a simple check for shorts before reconnecting the battery.

I was planning on using only the connectors that are available for the radio and speakers and not doing any connections involving bare wires for now. just to test and boot it up

will get an actual experienced guy to do the main install with all add-ons as im not sure whether i should dable in it

Ok so quick update. i did the install today. Did all of my cabling (Mic, GPS, Wifi antenna) today and set the components to nice locations. The Mic to the right of the driver in the to right corner of the windscreen since i have a right hand drive (See mic photo).
    mic.JPG

I made the wifi antenna go up on the opposite side then go up to the casing that has the LDA cameras and stuck it very neatly on the side (See wifi pic). wifi.JPG

For the GPS i left it inside the dash itself on a metal bracket near the instrument cluster. so its hidden but gets a clear gps signal. tested and working. gps.JPG

Had an issue with the Axxess-AX-TOY28SWC harness though. The support officer for atoto told me i didnt need the extra ASWC-1 module since the headunit is designed for toyota, so i didnt get one. but upon connecting i quickly found that there is no bridge between the wires that are supposed to relay the signals. (see swc pic).
    SWC.JPG

The rear camera was not connected as i am still waiting for the harness. once i get it i will hook t up and post feedback in case someone else wants to have a go at that harness.

Apart from the steering wheel control it runs really nicely and boots up in lightning speed. as soon as the car is on its up. This is what it looks like in the dash. dash.JPG

Now it fits perfectly (no additional dash kits) but it is not designed to be flush with the dash which i do not mind.

    Hi guys,

Its been a while but i finally got around to connecting my rear camera and steering wheel controls. The steering wheel controls work fine however the rear camera isn't working. it is not even triggering the head unit to change to reverse camera when i put the car in reverse.

So i was wondering if the below pinout for the connector applies in this case.

I wondering this because i saw a post where someone used the APVTY01 harness and the connector looks different to the one i have.
Furthermore, the mention of reverse and IG power (see quote below) is raising a few questons for me.
So far I have used the APVTY04 but it is not working.

the connector is not for any camera. it is for 2 power and 2 ground leads that tie together at the tweeter itself, thereby passing signal on to the woofer. odd arrangement. i don't want to cut the harness or the tweeter leads if possible. i like the option of reverting back to OEM if needed. the "female" connector on harness itself appears as "T13" white on page (?4) of PDF referenced above. but where could i source this particular connector?

    thanks for any suggestions

Check out the post below. I found a connector that fits it in Australia. but still had a few tweaks to do. as it only provides power like you mentioned.

Still havent connected my camera as well. got busy and havent bothered with it yet
