It gets you chuckling though: when doing DIY, how many owners will be double-parked beside their car, wearing balaclavas, and nervously looking up and down the street.

Unfortunately it is noisy, the chain is in a plastic sleeve that rests on the anti roll bar, when the car moves it squeaks against it. I tried yesterday to cable tie it to the bar, thinking that would help. Nope, made it worse. But it is worth doing. You'll have to pay for the Catloc yourself, the insurance won't cover it. Toyota did fit it, they do the deal all in for £200, which is pretty good.

Depending on where you take it you may be able to get it fitted and clamped down properly, I believe my dealer was being lazy in all honesty.

Thanks Nozzavtr, we'll get one fitted, and hope they'll do a better job than your dealer seems to have done! Fingers crossed it'll be sufficient deterrent/protection. Appreciate your helpfulness.

Precisely someone did comment in this forum they tried to intervene and they had abuse and even tools used to threaten them away do you really want to loose a limb for someone’s car?

It's not worth it, if I saw someone attacking my car I'd film it on my phone and get as many pictures of them as I can, I'd ring the police but they won't come out. It's not worth a metal pole to the head or something worse for a lump of metal in my opinion.

It took the police 5 weeks to get around to investigating my one. CCTV showed thieves make, model , colour of car, number people and reg. I had assumed they would follow up on the day of the incident while the trail was still hot

Yes of course. No doubt many now are home grown. Even for home grown UK prisons are not the deterent that they once were. I have a friend who has to visit several prisons as part of her job. On a recent overseas holiday she pronounced that her room was not up to the standard of prison cells she had seen in the UK.

It looks as though the theft of Prius catalytic converters is spreading to the suburbs....I had mine stolen today and I live in High Wycombe.

I rang around to get a price locally and all the places I spoke to said that they had seen a recent increase in the High Wycombe area with one place saying that their supplier said that there had been 19 cases in the past month! They also said that as most of the Prii in London had already been done, the bad guys were now going further afield to virgin territories.

Also, apparently, the replacement catalytic converters do not contain that same amount of precious metals and so are not such rich pickings?

P.S. By the way, Mr Clutch (local repair garage) and Halfords in High Wycombe, have both estimated about £650 for the replacement cat and the sensor.

People's fear of getting hurt in an intervention are precisely what the crooks are counting on, just as the 9/11 hijackers where counting on victims to passively stay back. Their 'business careers' will continue until something disrupts that, or until the available resource is depleted. Air passengers have now generally changed their own responses, but these theft victims have not.

Many parts of the U.S. have a particular solution to this, but legal and societal restrictions put this approach off limits in your country. (It is actually illegal here too before the crooks raise their weapon-tools or make serious threats of harm, but there are enough would-be victims willing to skip such formalities to put these crooks at significant personal risk.)

That leaves you with finding other paths to disrupt these perps' patterns. Try some brainstorming. I believe solutions likely need to be very noisy to quickly gather enough attention to quickly outnumber the criminal teams, probably from many directions simultaneously. Mechanically disabling or impeding their getaways might help, even if some folks must risk some property damage to get it done. Get a lot of cell phones recording, then get local news to display the videos of the crooks in action.

Additionally, try shaming local law enforcement for their inactions and glacially slow responses and lack of concern. Our own police must put up at least an appearance to taking action in order to keep a lid on excessive vigilantism, and to keep their positions. While many crooks are never caught, our police do get a fair number of them, more than enough to show that it is possible.

Sorry to hear you're another victim of this crime, it shows no sign of slowing down unfortunately. If you're not fussed about a genuine Toyota cat then the prices quoted are pretty decent, but a Catloc won't fit on an aftermarket cat, and you will need to protect the new cat somehow, to stop the scumbags having another go. I've added steel rods around the exposed areas on the exhaust, and secured them with jubilee clips. That's on top of a Catloc, welded manifold bolts, Tilt alarm sensor and security etching on the cats.

Tried that, doesn't get you anywhere. Police are stretched, and with the recent stabbing sprees in London it seems there's more going on to keep the law occupied. Well, that and speeding motorists around my area it seems.

I cant wait for the day these guys get caught and someone gives them a proper comeuppance.

There should be more coverage of this in the news because most prius owners are oblivious until theirs gets stolen

I had my Cat stolen last Thursday 11/07 at 1.00 am in Orpington saw the guys doing it and called cops in fairness they just missed them and came in a big riot van so no way they could chase them. It was dark so could not get pictures.Something needs to be done as this is now an epidemic.

Sorry to hear your catalytic converter was also stolen last Thursday . Considering that all Gen 2 London Prii have been virtually harvested of their CATS, you’d think Police forces up and down the country would be smart enough to predict that these CAT stealing predators would soon be spreading away from London into the other parts of the UK.

One calendar year of this unbridled crime spree (at least) and shockingly, the Grand Theft CAT Syndicate are STILL roaming the UK realm UNCHALLENGED, like they ACTUALLY own it .

I guess I should applaud the Orpington Police for gamely attempting to catch the bastards.
I’m sure none of us here would have complained in the slightest if these parasitic miscreants were caught in the act by the Police and liberally truncheoned and tasered to within an inch of their worthless thieving lives for “resisting arrest”....

    Shame they got away.

p.s. I wonder if they had a Police scanner on board their vehicle?

Unfortunately another victim I don’t see anything being done by the authorities about this due to other priorities and this is seen as a victimless crime your given a reference number and next day your case is closed by the police.

Saying that people have been burgled in Enfield and police have not turned up so not sure the priorities are at present.

An update on the gen 3 cat stolen the car has been written off as Jemca are taking too long to source the spare and at a cost of £2000. Sad times unfortunately.

I’m sorry to hear the Gen 3 is being written off.....but; wait a minute; £2,000 for a Gen 3 catalytic converter?

Are the implications, judging from the price, that the Gen 3 catalytic converters also contain as many precious metals (by volume) as much as the easily removed Gen 2 catalytic converters?.....

IF.....(that’s a BIG IF)....that is so, then sooner or later, these parasitic vermin will soon be along to rip off EVERY GEN 3 Prius in the UK...!!!
No doubt with new tools, new strategies and probably a dollop of violence to ensure they achieve their goals.

Prius 3 driving Mini-cab drivers beware!!

In that scenario, it’s not IF but WHEN...!!!
They’re not done with London or the rest of the UK yet, they’re just getting started....!!!
