    LOL,

It cost ME $59, but for someone else it could be $20,....or maybe $25,.....or maybe $52.27 !

The variable is the length of the cable needed.

The EVSE still works at 120V so the only problem he would have would be leaving it at home.

My place already had a 20A 240V outlet and a 50A 240V outlet in the garage (previous owner was a welder).

I ended up getting a new cord for the 20A outlet since the prime maxes out at 16A 240V. I keep the 12A 120V stock cable in the trunk. Charges the car up in 2hrs vs. 5:40.

For what it's worth, the cord also came with a adapter for a standard plug (120V) which I use if I'm charging overnight.

If I ever get a full EV, I'll use the 50A, but until then, the 20A is plenty for these cars.

The next-gen will inevitably double the draw. So if you purchase a second anything-with-a-plug vehicle for the household, you're set.

I built an adapter to plug the EVSE into my 240V dryer plug and have been using it as a Level-2 charger for over a year now. I have not run into any electrical or heating problems at all.

I got a 10' dryer plug (NEMA 10-30 in my case) and put a NEMA L6-30R in-line receptacle on the other end.

Then I got one of these:

SIMBR Generator Cord Adapter 30 Amp 3 Prong, NEMA L6-30P 10 Gauge, 125/250V, 1 Ft, Black

which plugs into the L6-30R and presents a standard 3-prong socket to plug the EVSE into, only it has 240VAC. (It was cheaper than one with a single outlet instead of three.)

These are all mounted inside of a large metal electrical box that I got at a recycle store for dirt cheap. I put tape over the two unused 3-prong receptacles just in case somebody thought they might be useful for a 120V device.

    Cost of parts:

    * 10-foot NEMA 10-30 dryer plug: $19.95 at Home Depot
    * NEMA L6-30R receptacle: $8.72 at Amazon
    * SIMBR generator cord adapter: $15.99 at Amazon

    Total cost: $44.66

The only tricky part was figuring out how to hook up the L6-30R to the dryer cord.

Honestly, you can get a one-foot long dryer plug to standard 3-prong plug adapter at a few places for $59.95 that would work just as well.

Or you can spend several hundred dollars on a L-2 EVSE with a different plug on the end.

Just to be clear, running the Prime's cable at 240V doesn't provide maximum charge rate, as even at 240V it's still limited to 12A, not the 16A the Prime's charger can demand, if it's available.

What I can tell you that it takes 2-1/2 hours to fully charge from empty at L2 (if it's not over 100F outside), which is a lot better than 5+ using L1.

Most of the time, it's at night and I don't need to drive it again until the next day. Every once in a while it's mid-day and I love being able to recharge it that fast.

Right - 5 hours is twice 2 1/2 hours and 240V is twice 120V. But 240V and 16A is 2.67 times as much power as 120V and 12A, which results in under 2 hours of charge time.

    For me, 0% to 100% = 2 hours & 25 minutes using my Toyota EVSE at 240 volts OR 5 hours & 30 minutes at 120 volts.

Tonight was a classic example of why I love using my OE Toyota EVSE unit at 240 volts for a 2:25 charge up time:

I came home & had roughly ~3 miles left from my travels, I plugged for about ~1 hour & then went out for dinner, before I drove off I had almost ~14 miles of battery. When I arrived back home I had ~1 mile of battery left...

We bought a Tesla way back and so we installed a 100A-capable circuit into our garage (built to house said EV and a couple sports cars) for future proofing (with an eye on installing a Tesla HPWC) but put in a 40A J1772 unit for the state tax rebate a few years ago (back then 40A was the highest you could get without significant wait time - there was a special order Clipper Creek unit that did like 90 if I remember right).

Our L2 charges the Prime from 0 EV range in about 2 hours. Now that we have 2 EVs to charge, and since HPWCs are no longer being sold, we figured just leave the 40A charger.

    Doesn't the Prime have a 3.3 kW charger? 3300W/240V = 13.75A.

I see most onboard chargers rated in kW.

    Well, read your owner's manual:

Well mine on the L2 averages 1hr 50min (if the AC kicks on to cool the battery then about 2hr 20min, I've got a juiceplug which lets me see graphically what the charge is doing)

Cheap adapter and an existing 220v circuit works great!

Don’t see a need to have the L2. I schedule it to charge at midnight to 6 and I’m good.

Same here. I came home today with 1% left on the battery. It will be fully charged and ready to go at 6:15 am, on L1.
