I have a 2006 Prius and it has a squealing noise coming from the engine when going in reverse. I have tried braking in N some to "clean out" whatever might be causing this. This has been to no avail. A squeaking noise still occurs, and after the car has been on for a while, I hear a clicking sound when going from park to reverse or from park to drive.

When going from park to reverse, the car slightly moves. It is a pronounced clicking and I can feel the car move. Also, the car sometimes starts shaking when it is going into reverse. Also, this happens when the electric motor is on (not the gas engine). It still squeaks when the gas engine is running although I am not sure if the clicks happen then or not.

Is this normal? I took it into Toyota (made an appointment) and the service adviser told me they were backed up and that the squealing noise was normal when going in reverse when I demonstrated the noise. This noise only started a couple of weeks ago. She told me they can clean something the next time I have it in for service. I am not sure about the clicking and sometimes shifting when going from P to R, but I have not noticed it before a couple of weeks ago.

I have a 2012 Prius and it has been doing the exact same things for several weeks now. I don’t feel as concerned with the clicking as I am the incredibly loud squealing that happens from the front of the car (maybe from behind the driver side tire) when ONLY reversing from a stationary position (or parked) to the right/passenger side. It does not do this at all when reversing to the left/driver side or moving forward in any way. My brakes have been checked twice now and each time I’ve been told they are in good shape & roughly half-way worn. My travel is all paved roads.
This car is my only source of transportation and I hope someone can point me in the right direction of what I should have checked out. It has roughly 125,000 miles on it.

Thank you! I've taken it to the Toyota dealer and paid the $50 diagnostic fee & Jiffy Lube then, and now America's Tire Company, and a few others....essentially everywhere I take my car for a service that advertises brake checks.

It's still making the sound ONLY in reverse. I've been told by others there could be "a rock stuck in the rotor" that would only make it squeal when moving in only one direction, which just sounds weird to me. I'm at a complete loss. Being a working mom with 4 kids, I can't afford to not have a working vehicle so I try to stay current on my checks. Any help is appreciated.

it would be sad if none of those places could find a rock.

does it only happen as you apply the brakes?
