    Quick question...

I ordered a replacement fob housing on eBay and it came with a hard key blank. Don't really need it, but it's useless as is. Can I take my existing hard key to any locksmith for duplication?

Yes. You can even get a full size key cut. In case you need a lockout key.

In fact, the biggest key on my ring is my spare for my wife's '07. However, Gen 3 & 4 are a little more sophisticated and need a different cutter because it's actually a shaped slot in the side of the blade. The spare I got for my Prime was too thin for the computerized cutter at the smith I usually go to, but another one had a manual one and it worked fine.

    Gen 2 is nice and old-school. (y)

I got a key cut at home depot couple times from the regular Toyota #35 blank. Very Cheap. Under 5$ as far as I remember.

I bought a cheap blank on eBay from China for something like $2 (Toyota is way too expensive). Then I had it cut at our local Ace Hardware on their manual cutter for $1.06 (including tax). Can't beat the price really!

For my Gen 2, I bought the blank at Ace Hardware and they cut it for me then and there. No fuss, no muss. Different story with the Prime!

My Ace didn't think they'd have the key to fit in the fob, but I had already bought one specifically for the fob online.

The key from Ace or Homedepot ( #35) would not fit in FOB. But serves the purpose of opening the door.
For my Rav4 Hybrid, I got a similar key ( To open the door only) made from a Ebay posting by a locksmith under 12$. These newer kind of keys cannot be cut at hardware stores.

I find such keys, which only open the door, useful when going to the beach.

Mine doesn't fit the fob either, but it fits the key ring with my other keys just fine. Since the fob I have for the wife's car doesn't have the SKS functions, it's better to have it not in the fob anyway. (y)

I took my blank from a new fob to a local locksmith to cut it. He ruined the key.

I've never actually used my hardware key. I always use SKS or sometimes my fob buttons, but the only time I used the key was testing. I bought a new fob to make sure I had a spare and figured I should have a key to go with it.
