I had a code for insufficient air flow to the EGR. Today I cleaned the EGR pipe, the connections, and the valve (without taking it off). I cleaned it with carburator cleaner and it quickly misfires. I learned you don't do this. So I took it back off and cleaned it with Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner. I cleaned the mass air flow sensor as well. It was still misfiring. I replaced all spark plugs and ignition coils. Still misfiring. I have now thrown codes for the EGR, high air input temperature, and a misfire. Any tips will definitely be appreciated!

So you cleaned everything except the intake manifold and the egr cooler:whistle:?

What level of deposits did you find?

    How did the plugs look?

Everything is tight and no electrical connections are loose and all are securely fastened?

Until the whole circuit is cleaned, the weakest links are still present .

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Correct. I sprayed some cleaner in the intake manifold but didn't take it apart. The plugs needed changed and there was a lot of build up

It’ll need to be separately cleaned and not just sprayed;).

How many miles on your Prius?

Good luck with the next steps(y).

Spraying stuff in is kinda fuitle, and could mess up the MAF, depending on where you spray. As @Raytheeagle said, you need to dive in, clean the whole thing, after removal. Some boilerplate, and attachements:

The simplest way to see where you're at, is to check the degree of carbon build up in the EGR pipe, a stainless steel connecting pipe between the EGR valve and intake manifold. Watch @NutzAboutBolts video #16 here:

Nutz About Bolts Prius Maintenance Videos | PriusChat

Two or three other videos linked there too, for the full cleaning of the intake manifold, full EGR clean, and Oil Catch Can install.

    Good thread:

    Another:

    Somewhat tools worth having:

    E8 Torx socket (mandatory)
E6 Torx socket (optional, but good to have, to remove the throttle body studs from intake manifold)
3/8" ratchet wrench, regular and long handle, flex head, you can never have enough
1/4" ratchet wrench, or 3/8" to 1/4" reducer
Ratchet extensions: you can never have enough
Long needle nose piers, straight and bent tip
Ratcheting 12mm box wrench (optional, but makes disconnection of the EGR cooler from exhaust easier)
Torque wrench (3/8" and 1/4" both good to have)
Floor jack and safety stands (or ramps): basically some method to raise front, if you need to take underpanel off, which you may need to, both for access and to recover dropped items.

You must have all of this saved and readily available:).

    Comes in handy(y).

I don't believe cleaning the EGR pipe and valve would cause a misfire after cleaning. What connections did you clean with the carb cleaner?

I cleaned the connection to the EGR and the one into the manifold. I'm thinking I fluffed the manifold with the carb cleaner and this started my problems.

I see you are an organizer of files too:).

We have a desktop at the house and it certainly allows for good record keeping. But since I’m on my iPhone almost exclusively, I have a lot of safari windows opened:cool:.

2 are Prius Chat windows so searching and adding links is easier for placement into the commenting thread (y).

Went to a mechanic today. He is 90% sure it's bad gas. Is there a way I can siphon the gas straight out of the tank? I don't want to have to drain the gas using the pump or just drive it out.
