I came across a study that said the Prius was the most driven passenger vehicle, reaching on average 13,534 miles annually. That's a solid 12.9% higher than the average car on the road annually. I'm not surprised seeing how comfortable and drivable these cars are whether it's going to work or running errands. If anyone is curious about the study that shows the most and least driven cars, it can be found on iSeeCars website under studies.

Says more about "studies" than about Priuses or car buying patterns....but yeah.

It would have been more honest to say something like "Prius = great commuter car, and here's why...."

The Prius is FAR from "the most driven" passenger car.
It's more like, it's the passenger car that's driven the furthest...kinda....."statically."

Passenger car sales last year ranged from the Camry (#1) to the Malibu (#10).

Priuses didn't even make the top 10, and my bet is that it wasn't even CLOSE....and we're talking about CARS...not SUVs, crossovers, or trucks!!

    It's a GREAT car.
    Especially when you're driving one...(don't ask why... ;) )

    BUT....it's still a niche vehicle.

Lots of taxi fleets use Prius and for a reason. When you're replacing a Crown Vic transmission every year and engine every other year, having a Prius where you only need to replace the transaxle once every 6-7 years and battery about the same time is highly superior. And these vehicles make up tons of miles.

They aren't saying Priuses were driven more miles in total than any other car; they're saying people who drove Priuses put more miles on their individual cars, on average, than people who own other models.

ETA: Responding to ETC(SS), but 2k1Toaster snuck in there just before I hit "post"....

    Yeah.
    I get that...because I happen to DRIVE a fleet car that's a Prius.

All I'm saying is that it's a poorly worded "study"....;)

No, it's not the study that was poorly worded, but just the title on this thread in PriusChat.

Over at iSeeCars, the article is titled "The Cars Owners Drive the Most."

And, incidentally, the Prius is #11 on their list, behind 10 SUVs.

I think it is important to note this line, which betrays a selection bias:

"iSeeCars.com analyzed more than 2.3 million sales of 10-year-old cars to identify the top 13 vehicles with the highest annual mileage, which were all at least 12 percent above average. "

I.e. this study is based on odometers readings of 10-year-old used cars being offered for sale. It doesn't reflect vehicles that are turned over sooner, nor later, nor kept 'forever'.

Which would tie in with why in London, there are hundreds of Gen II Prii still stealthily sneaking around like Ninjas . They’re literally lurking on every street corner with that enigmatic “Kermit The Frog Smirk” on their grilles!

Check the odometers on these puppies and they’re all well over 140,000 miles.....mostly!
(Mine is one of the few exceptions at a rather uncouth 116,200 miles approximately)

I’d wager a large number of them are ex-leased mini cabs now in the hands of private owners. Many are handed down in the same family. Smart families realise how reliable these Gen IIs are and are loath to let a good one go.
Mine was an ex-Lloyd’s Bank fleet vehicle - still has the mats!

And yes, having a Prius has opened a whole new world of travel for me. Once again, I can go places without worrying about fuel costs!

Cheap reliable motoring after the sting of the original cost has been sucked up by the first buyer - what’s not to like?

The studies the released on those topics, and possibly this one, they don't specify one way or the other, were only looking at one year of sales data.

And why 10 year old cars if the metric compared in average annual miles?

Speaking of bad ways to put things, this is from the article:
"iSeeCars.com analyzed over 2.3 million used ten-year-old cars sold from 2015 to 2018."
So they must have made their analysis in 2029 and transferred it back to the present. Is sending information back in time that much easier than transferring matter?

 That was poorly worded. I'm taking it to mean they looked at 2005 to 2008 model year cars sold when they reached ten years old.

The average annual miles driven in the US was 13,476 as of last year, with wide differences between age groups and sex.

I read it as the cars being ten years old at time of sale in 2015-2018. Not new cars during that time window.
