Any reason not to install this square 500ml oil catch can? It has a sight glass to check the level, and it has a drain plug (although I assume that it wouldn't be too difficult to drop).

(I don't see the link in Preview mode, so I don't know whether others can see it. The Amazon item no. is B07BQS1JG8)

    It violates the KISS principle.

    Nope;).

Use it as it is still a wide spot in the line:).

Keep us posted on performance if you purchase and install it (y).

Adblocks seem to block Amazon links, at least here. Here's a screen grab:

    upload_2019-7-30_22-7-21.png

I would stick with non-vented style. Is there a non-vented square one? The square shape might simplify mounting, being more stable.

FWIW, I went with Moroso 85474, but they're not cheap.

(I took a bullet, turned off my adblocker to get this. Man there's a lot of dreck here.)

Newhybridowner is in Michigan. Don't OCCs freeze in cold temps? Is a frozen OCC an issue?

Prii (and most modern cars) violate the KISS principle. Just go back to side-valve engines with low compression ratios.

The vent doesn't have to be used.
Looks nice, but more than I want to spend.

That one looks like you can drain it without a hassle? (In my case ease of maintenance means the maintenance might actually get done.)

Yeah, I drain in conjunction with oil changes, from below. I mounted on the lower cross beam, on a slotted angle bracket. Caution though: be sure to make the connection to that beam flexible, use some rubber washers, install bolts finger tight with a second nut torqued against the first to lock. The reason: that beam needs to flex, especially if you're using the front/centre jacking point, which is the underside of the beam.

With the slotted angle atop the beam, and the OCC pushed up high in it's (supplied) bracket, it just clears the engine underpanel.

So I should forget about an OCC and just try to mop out the intake manifold regularly?

What about the egr circuit then?

Doesn't the EGR circuit still need to be cleaned out even with an OCC installed? Or maybe not as often?

Is there any consensus that an OCC should not be installed in climates with the likelihood of hard frosts?

There's a Finland member who disconnects his in winter IIRC. Still I would try-and-monitor, not sure how freeze prone they are.

I think an effective OCC will slow the rate of carbon build up in EGR circuit, but no hard data to confirm.

I install my OCC about 18 mo back, and recently checked EGR pipe was absolutely clean. Only about 10k kms tho.

My OCC hasn't frozen, in more than 2 years and -15 degree F cold snap this past winter. Water condenses in it during the winter, but with all the solute in it, its freezing point is depressed. And it's heated whenever the engine runs.

Heard some feller dump small amount of anti freezing wiper fluids in the can and kept everything in the can from freezing.

You don't need to do that: any solute dissolved in water lowers its freezing point based on the amount of solute, not its chemical composition, and there's plenty of oil in there already.
