    Hello all,

I need to replace the battery on my 2012 Prius III . It still has the original and finally failed. I had read elsewhere that the best battery to get for the money is the Optima DS46B24R and that it is a lot better then the OEM battery. Would you all agree or have a different recommendation.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Thanks. I am leaning towards the Toyota battery currently for $217 since the original made it 7 years at this point. Wanted to see what everyone here had to say first though.

Optima no longer makes spiral battery design, they were reliable. It’s just a regular battery now with spiral prices. Don’t get got as some will say.

Hard to go wrong with OEM equipment! That battery was designed for the car anyways. :)

I appreciate all the great input. True-start Toyota battery it is. :)

I am still seeing this YELLOWTOP® DS46B24R on the Optima site, albeit at $238. Appears to have the spiral-wrapped plates.

I am in need of a new battery as well on my 2013 Prius, could you tell me where did you find the best deal on yours? Truestart correct? My car is parked since last night and my battery shows 11.4V and my mileage recently went from high 40's to low 30's, but I also upgraded my wheels from 15" to 17" with each wheel being exactly 10lbs heavier... I had no idea about the weight prior to changing it.

I wonder why Toyota used AGM battery. The most probably because the battery is in the “passanger space”. Optima is more expensive then the Optifit installed at Toyota services - at least in Hungary.
As Prius can be started 4 pcs of AA battery, almost any battery will be able to start it. I have heared many people using regular Varta or Bosh battery for tears purchased on third price.

i think you're right, safety. the biggest issues have always been the lack of auto shutdown if you left a light on or door open, the lack of getting a hint that the battery is getting weaker, and of course, the cost.

not the battery itself, which works fine for its purpose.

The Prius battery only has to have enough voltage and amperage to run the computers.
Then the HV battery takes over and tops off the 12V battery.
So it's not putting out the gases then the average car battery.

Because it is better in all respects.......including no need to add water.
Did I hear right that they started putting in conventional batteries again on the models where the battery moved back to the engine bay ?
If so, that is a BAD move for customers.......just to save a few bucks on each car built.

A LOT of owners seem happy with the one that Pep Boys sells.

I mean when the original battery was dead they replaced it with regular one. Nothing about Toyota.

Up until very recently......2017 models maybe.......the "regular one" WAS an AGM.

AGM is not the regular for me, so I talked about something like this.

Where is the battery located in the model car that you have ?
If it is inside the passenger cabin (under back seat) or in the trunk, it came with an AGM from the factory and someone has changed it along the way.

That’s what I want to say. Some guys replaced the dead AGM battery in Gen 3 Prius with non AGM and using it for years without problem.
