The driver's side axle, yes. In this case, #2 was in reference to this being the second replacement of the driver's side drive axle.

My question is this, I have this noise. If I just leave it the way it is will I have an issue, for example will it break on me in the middle of the road?

Toyota has withdrawn bulletin T-SB-0157-18, “Click Noise From LF Wheel Area During Deceleration,” which I mentioned in post #173. NHTSA’s website has the original bulletin (PDF) and the revised bulletin (PDF), which states only that as of April 17, 2019, “This bulletin is no longer applicable and is now obsolete.”

Original axle replaced 31k. Noise is back at 61k on my 2016 four touring. Contacted Toyota Corp and awaiting contact from case manager. Not sure what part was used for first replacement

Very interesting that it was withdrawn. It makes it so much easier to explain to a dealer when you can tell them, "Just take a look at TSB#XXXX".

I wonder why they would withdraw it.

Shaft Assembly Front Drive - Toyota (43420-47050) that was the new part for the TSB is now a discontinued part and is no longer available for purchase. I am guessing they got some note about the new part and that is why they replaced mine with the old part as I did it near the time when the TSB was withdrawn.

Part of me thinks that they determined the new part wasn't necessary, and that this was instead a factory issue when assembling some axles.(maybe too little grease? wrong viscosity?)

I can confirm I had this issue and replaced the axle with the old part number like 1 week before the TSB was out. 25k miles later it's still going fine, whereas at 20k or so is when I first noticed the issue originally.

I have a UK 2017 Prius Excel. Clicking from the front started to appear at about 16k miles. Took it in once and the tech said he couldn't hear it. Took it in again today at about 20k miles, demonstrated it to the "head tech". It was easy to demo: tech was sat in left seat with window open, the noise was very obvious and he acknowledged it right away.

They are ordering a new "FR Axle Assembly" to fit. They showed me a TSB which was dated 17 June 2019. It showed old and new part numbers. I asked for a copy of the TSB but they declined, stating that it was confidential.

Anyway, it's booked in to have the axle replaced soon. They were very nice to me at the dealer (Inchcape Nottingham, UK) and offered to replace the axle with absolutely no fuss at all. They are even going to collect the Prius from my house to do it.

I'll post an update after the work has been done.

Exactly same thing happened here. Had the work carried out on 2/11 and today wife takes the car in for oil change. They tell she needs an alignment as the front left tire is wearing out unevenly. Same axle side that was changed.

The invoice for the warranty work mentions alignment adjustment but no such paperwork was supplied to me at the time showing before and after alignment values , hence they are basically common crooks and lying.

Can someone advice on how I can engage Toyota USA to assist me on this matter?

I remember arguing with RENAULT Australia back in 1978. My new car needed a new gearbox seal under warranty. And they charged me for the oil. I lost. And yes - they were able to point to the warranty "agreement" that oils and consumables weren't covered.

This is TOYOTA USA warranty (in part):

You're circled article has nothing to do with the CV axle replacement.

No - but as with my RENAULT - I wonder if TOYOTA are sticking by the letter of the "law" - that wheel alignments after 12 months aren't their worry.

In RENAULT's case, they pointed to the fact that all fluids and servicing was the responsibility of the owner - I pointed out that the gearbox oil wasn't due to be changed for a few years - they pointed back to the fact that fluids ... were the re$pon$ibility of the owner. It was the principle of the thing as far as I saw it.

But - I lost. But - memories run long - like 41 years.

No, these dealers are just pure crooks it's that simple. You're over complicating it fella

Did I mention that she was also being pushed to buy a , wait for it...$500 induction cleaning service also? Miles on her Prius is at approx 33k, the axle was replaced back in February at 30K miles. I also checked the tires today and saw no indication of uneven tire wear, infact the paper work showed all her tires were I think 8/32.
The original invoice when the axle was changed on 2/11 indicated alignment, but further down I circled an area that said something else which I don't understand.

I'll be interested to find out what TOYOTA Corporate say.

If it's like my RENAULT, I don't think you'll find it was the dealer. I contacted RENAULT Australia and it was them that told me, not the dealer.

Yes, maybe some dealers today would let the oil slip through, or a wheel alignment - and add a few dollars to every other job for the day to make up for their loss.

But this was a very small country dealership - the focus was on workshop repairs/service rather than selling cars. Back in the '70s, country dealers here weren't all glass and glitter like today - he didn't have a showroom as such, part of the workshop had a couple of brand new cars and 3 or 4 second-hand cars for sale. And - only one staff-member, who was the owner, mechanic and salesman.

I don't see any uneven tire wear. The guy just said that to sell her an alignment . However I wasnt present when she had gone to the dealership to get her oil changed.

At the time it got me thinking that they perhaps skipped the alignment when the driver side axle was replaced on 2/11. Since the service adviser according to my wife pointed at uneven tire wear on the very same wheel of which the axle was replaced .

I've a million and one problems in my life, dealing with scum ain't one of them.

I read that as saying they decided to not do the required wheel alignment. It was likely initially added automatically.
