Vibration after new Goodyear tires

Just wanted to give you an update. My Toyota dealer basically told me they will not provide any warranty on Goodyear tires because they purchase them from third party vendors. I called Goodyear and after 30 minutes on hold they recommended to take the car to one of their owned stores. Drove 20 miles to their store and got another tire balancing done, paid $70 additional dollars for the job, and highway tested them yesterday.

Now I am more puzzled than ever. While keeping the car at a constant 75 MPH, the vibration will come and go randomly. For some stretches the car will drive smoothly, but noticed at long road curves the car will tend to vibrate.

It really messed up my car this tire change. I loved the Prius but this is starting to anoy me greatly. I bought this car as our family car for long trips and this is not working out as I planned. I will keep monitoring it and see if it gets better.

Final note: avoit shitty Toyota dealers and Goodyear tires.

That’s about right for two tires slightly out of balance; one on each side of the car. They’re turning slightly different speeds through gentle curves, so the modulation from the two tires is changing phase. Occasionally they are falling into sync, which amplifies the vibration at the sync point and cancel each other out when they drift 180° out of phase.

Note that there is at least some chance that the balance is actually within tolerance but another part elsewhere could be amplifying the vibration, allowing more of it through to you. Might be worth checking the tie rod ends, but this could still just be crummy balance.

I’d go with crummy balance for a waste of two hours and $70 out of pocket, Alex...

Not to mention the dealership you bough5 the tires from ought to warranty their balancing work, which was deficient, to be charitable.

When I purchased my v I had new M Tires installed... it had a slight pull when I got it... pulled even more with new tires... had aligned twice.. finally found out it was a Bad Tire.... even though Discount Tire didn't want to believe it.

Found this post again and decided to update it. My car has 69,000 miles (10,000 miles more than the original post) and my car is still vibrating.
Usage did not improve the ride. I will have to live with it until these tires explode on me.
Note to self: test your tires at more than 75 mph when buying them.

Is this "cv joint" noise still happening? If so, chase that some more.

Otherwise, I would find another Prius v for sale and test drive it on a known smooth stretch of highway. Ideally one with similar Goodyear or Michelin tires. Then compare the ride and noise to yours.

If push came to shove, buy new Michelins and sell the Goodyears on Craigslist for $300. With only 10k miles in a year and a half you probably won't wear out the Goodyears before you get rid of the car.

By the way, I always get around 100k miles on my Michelins, they ride good, reduce road noise and keep their balance well. The Prius v is not great on bad roads but mine is a smooth cruiser on the highway. Plus it has pitch and bounce control.

figures the toyota dealer would put steely weights on your alloy rims. I hope the goodyear shop pulled them and put gluebacked weights on your rims instead. geez louise Edit: If those weights are still on the rims they'll have most likely already left corrosion marks on your alloy rims and the goodyear balance is suspect too.

Have you jacked up the car and checked each wheel for play in all directions - up/down side to side for warn ball joint or tie rod end and spin forward/backward to check the CV joints of the drive shafts up front.

The part about the alignment being slightly off sounds strange to me. You'd think they would tell you if the alignment is good. If it was off and they got it back within spec that's a different story. Did you get an alignment printout from the dealer when they "did" the work?

Still, I'd check for play in all the wheels with them off the ground. One by one if you have to.
