I drove my new Prime home from the dealer on 7/31 and put it in the garage and connected it to the charger that came with the vehicle. I took the car out of the garage today to put on plates that just arrived. It looks like the car still has not charged. My other car is a Bolt so, I plugged the Prius into my Level 2 station outside and the three LEDs lit for a moment then all went out. The Level 2 station is indicating no charging and the light is on the "Ready" indication.

I dont know why Toyota has to make things so complicated. Can anyone help walk me through understanding if it is or is not charged? You would think that would be a basic function that should be easy to do.

My first suggestion is read the manual. There are a few ways to charge your Prime. Click the link to see them.

Turn the car on and then off. There will be a prompt for charging. Select “charge now”.
There is also a button down low to the left near the gas cap release to bring up the
    Charging options.

    According to...what?

When the Prime is fully charged the green light at the connector is out. The green light on the charge cord control box is out. The 3 blue LEDs on the dash are out. The multifunction display shows 100% if you have the correct screen showing. If you pull the connector plug then put it back in, the green light under the connector will light for a very short time. I know, Toyota didn't make it immediately obvious.

After a drive I plug in the charge cord. The control box gets its green light and makes a clickclick-click sound. It's charging. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for the first blue LED to illuminate. The first blue LED flashes for a long time. The next step has the first staying on and the second flashing, but not as long. Then the two stay on and the third flashes for the shortest time. Then all 3 go out as well as the green light on the charge control box. The car is fully charged.

Also after you plug the car in, open the driver’s side door. If you leave the windows down you’ll get a warning that will cover up the Charge Now requestor. But if you sit down in the driver’s seat and close the door, the Charge Now requestor will pop back up. Use the right selector button on the steering to press the middle button with the period. Should start charging then.

Or you could try and plug the EVSE in, wait until all comms have stopped between the car and pull the EVSE out and then plug it back in. Sometimes that works and sometimes no.

there is a battery icon on one of the screens that tells you how much charge it has. in miles or percentage.

I'd check your charge schedule set up. It might be its set to charge at a certain time schedule.

Sometimes mine goes into some charge schedule even though its set to charge now. 95% of the time it does that immediately charges but occasionally it won't immediately charge but if you go back 10 minutes later its gone into charge mode. Seems like a bug in the software

What made you think the car was not charged? The fact when you plugged in L2 EVSE into the PRIME and all three LED were lit and tuned off suggests that your PRIME was indeed fully charged. The easiest thing is to turn it on and see the battery SOC. If you have set it in % display, it should show "100%".

thanks guys. I was aware of the charge now option. The issue was the way information is displayed. After looking some more, it seems the battery is 100% charged. The way they split the battery into two sections makes it look like it was not fully charged. I will read the manual.

It will take some getting used to. I had the Honda FIT EV and now a Bolt EV that were much less complex to use. I also have a 2010 Prius so I thought it might have been easier to get use to the changes.

Glad to hear your brand new PRIME is not a lemon after all. LOL Yeah, the display on PRIME does take some getting use to. It is not as simple as my old Gen3, to say the least. It displays far more information than regular hybrid cars and probably more than other BEVs and PHEV. That being said, it does provide very interesting data for inquisitive minds. Enjoy your new car.

I had a similar problem that sometimes when I am driving on pure EV and then plug in, then it will not charge. Some guys told me that this could be to avoid overheating of battery.

This is frequently caused by a scheduled charge event. You can always override to "charge now" through the dash display or the hard to find button on the lower left dash near the fuel door release.

There is only one battery (not counting the 12V accessory battery). That battery display showing two sections is purely an artifact of the software. When the state of charge of the battery gets too low, the car switches into hybrid (HV) mode and behaves like a regular Prius, using the gasoline engine to keep the charge level within a small range. The upper section of the battery display show how much charge is allocated for electric (EV) mode; the lower section of the battery display reflects charge allocated for operating in HV mode. But it is all just battery management policy for the (one) battery.
