The car had been very quiet when I bought it at 43k miles. However, it now has 80k miles on it. I brought the car to the dealer to have them check it out/diagnose it. They stated it was a normal noise, which I thought it was weird. To describe what noise I am talking about: I turn the car on, to run, with "ready" displayed. I let the AC, with fan on HIGH, Lights turned on, wiper blades turning, every known device running as I purposely drain the IMA hybrid battery. When it gets depleted, the engine is forced to run and charge it back up a little bit then cuts off when it has some reserve power stored in the hybrid battery. During this time when it cycles between charging mode, and start of discharge (engine turned off, but accessory running mode,) there is a loud jarring noise that is audible from the engine. I can hear it sometimes while driving as well in slow traffic at traffic stops. To me, it sounded like a loud worn out AC cycling clutch engaging/disengaging, but the hybrids don't have that, as it is electrical. Any suggestions what to look at, or if it is indeed "normal?" Should I go to another Toyota dealer and get a second opinion?
It would probably help a lot to post a recording if you can ... I just read all that and still have no idea what sort of noise you've got.
the electric a/c is noisy and gets noisier when it is dying. any change in sound when you switch it off and on?
Yes. I hope the starting procedure above is just for diagnosis purposes.......because doing that on a routine basis is just.....well......not wise.
I’m with you in that I think it’s a funny way to spell “HSD” but I got the gist of what he was saying anyway, you know? We all want to see (and hear) “Jarring, screeching noise… THE MOVIE” (2019)
