Featured PRIUS sales in Australia - by variant

    Statistics for July 2019 in Australia:
    • PRIUS 15
    • PRIUS c 27
    • PRIUS v 25
    Interesting that "v" is considerably more than PRIUS. But both pathetic.

    Additionally, they said Camry and RAV4 were "about 50% hybrid" - (Total Camry 1598, Total RAV4 2419). I can't see Corolla Hybrid listed - last I heard it was selling about 40% hybrid.

    [EDIT - TOYOTA said in May that 31.4% of Corolla - Hatch only sales are hybrid (though elsewhere it was reported that there were supply issues. And it was reported recently that the Corolla Sedan, which isn't a big seller, will be coming in Hybrid at the end of 2019.]

    As long as they are selling hybrids, I don't care if Prius sales are low. The Prius was the trail-blazer for Toyota hybrids. Now the game is to take the mainstream. In Japan, hybrid/PHEV/FCV sales have plateaued at about 40% of Toyota/Lexus sales. In Europe, it is over 50%. North America YTD to June is 10%. Asia (outside of Japan) is 10%. Worldwide it is at 20% YTD (June) up from 17% in 2018.

    Australian sales of hybrids (all brands, passenger+SUV, private and non-private) YTD were 15493 vs 7610 last year (up 103%). July hybrid sales were 3094, up 248% YOY.

    Total July sales (all brands, passenger+SUV, private and non-private, all fuels) were 63280. Total July electrified sales (all brands) were 3384 (5.3% of all sales). Diesels were down but still sold 9326 (2.75 times the electrified sales).

    Hybrids are gaining traction in Australia but there is still a long way to go.

    What are average monthly or previous year sales of Prii? Those numbers would be ridiculously low in the states, but I don't know if the same applies to Australia. Some context would be helpful.

    Sorry - hard to find out (unless I'm a car dealer who pays for access to the Vehicle Chamber of Commerce). Our car market is much smaller than in USA - ~ 1 million cars/small trucks/SUV/4WD a year.

    But way down on what it was with Gen 2/3. Which is crazy in a way - as Gen 4 is so much better as a car. The journalists reckoned it looked odd - and then drive ugly Twin Cab Trucks and never mention how ugly they look. I think there's an anti-common-sense factor out there.

    Almost every manufacturer and class of vehicle has slowed sales in the last 18 months. Not sure why - possibly cars improved so much in the last 10 years that people are happy to keep them longer? I remember back to the '60s/'70s with 12 months warranty on a car, it wasn't unusual to have it back for rust repairs in less than 12 months - and oil leaks, windscreen leaks, boot (trunk) leaks etc. That doesn't happen now (almost never). I've seen 20 year old cars with zero rust.

    I suspect you’ll trade rust for sun damage today!

    Those numbers are low. Even in Canada, we’ll sell a few hundred Prii a month. (Although the Prius c has dipped below 100 several times). Now the Prime outsells the Prius 2:1.

    True - dashboards in the '50s didn't get much affected, but today with more sloping glass. Mind you, the first plastic dashboards didn't last well, cracked quite quickly, and today's are much better. Metallic paints in the sun aren't as robust - but, except for white, most are metallics now.

    The Prius liftback didn't break 50 thousand last year in the US.

    Japan's car market is about 5.2 million annually. The US is nearly 20 million.

    Toyota/Lexus sells about 1.5 M a year in Japan and about 2.5 M in the US. Their market share is a bigger part of the Japanese market.
