Has anyone with the advanced Tech package had to replace their windshield? Mine lasted a good 9 years before finally getting cracked.

I took it to Safelite (never again), they tried to replace mine and couldn't get the LKA to work. It's been at Toyota for weeks now, they decided to go with OEM glass hoping that would fix it and the glass was on back order. Now they're telling me it's going to take 4 hours to calibrate Since it's a "rare bird" and no one in the shop knows how to do it. Many didn't even know 2010s had lane keeping as an option!

Don't they have procedures for this stuff???

Great tactic to jack up labor hours to inflate repair bills, they’re always one step ahead.

Yea, they told me it's a 4hr job. Technically insurance will cover it. The windshield alone was $1000 plus probably another 500 in labor. $1500... for a cracked windshield.

I had my front windshield replaced after a rock chip that could not be repaired. Total cost = $1700 (about $1000 for the OEM windshield + install, $700 for the LKAS sensor calibration at a Toyota dealer). The calibration took about half a day, since only a single technician knew how to do it at the whole dealership.

Toyota couldn't have found a better cash cow.

I'm glad I'm not alone. Yea, ridiculous amount of money. I suspect it could have been calibrated with the non-OEM windshield, but no one knew how to do it. If insurance wasn't covering it, I'd be so upset.

    Thanks

What is LKA? Is that for the display on the windshield?

Which dealership did you go to? I'm going to have my dealership contact them if they can't figure it out.

    LKA = Lane Keep Assist.
In newer Toyotas, its now LDW = Lane Departure Warning.

Basically, the OEM windshield is necessary for the HUD (heads up display), and the calibration is for the front camera. The Toyota dealership refuses to calibrate a non-Toyota windshield. I noticed that, after the calibration, I had an extra Toyota sticker under the hood certifying
The dealership that performed my calibration is Piercey Toyota, in San Jose. The service advisor who knows about the procedure is "Jason." After the calibration, I noticed a new Toyota sticker under my hood, certifying the calibration.

UPDATE (in case anyone else runs into this issue in the future).

The shop foreman was able to get the camera recalibrated and needed 3 bays to do it. Car in center bay, empty bays on either side. Now there is an issue with the car actually responding. They've verified the camera is recognizing the lanes via a laptop hooked up to the car, they have to troubleshoot the rest on Monday when Toyota HQ is open.

I test drove it myself and confirmed it didnt work. When Lane Keep Assist (LKA) is activated the / \ lines on the MID never go bold (indicating the car know its in the lane). I went above 45mph (according to tech only need to go above 43mph... its probably 70kph since its Japanese) and even set the auto cruise control to verify it wouldnt steer for me. I will continue updating as more info comes in.

    ------------

For those that arent familiar with the system, on Gen3 Priuses with LKA and Dynamic Range Cruise Control (DRCC), the car will "auto steer" if its traveling over 45mph and the DRCC is activated. This is indicated by a steering wheel icon which appears in the MID. If you do not touch the steering wheel for a certain amount of time, it will beep and deactivate. Its by no means perfect, but it does alleviate the amount of force required to maintain the car in the center of a lane around bends and greatly reduces fatigue on long road trips. It also steers you back into the lane if you run off the shoulder.

I was so impressed with my 2010's ability to maintain lanes I ended up getting a 2017 Prime with similar features expecting it to be amazing. The Prime is disappointing to say the least when it comes to lane keeping and going over a line on the shoulder. It seems like Toyota chickened out and dumbed down the system instead of improving it. I will say the Prime recognizes the lines in the road better (and works above 32mph vs. 45mph), but its corrective actions are much worse. I imagine that could all be fixed with a software upgrade, its not like it doesnt have the ability to do it, but I dont think Toyota will ever update it. The auto parking is much better on the Prime than on the Gen3 as is everything else, but that LKA is amazing on the Gen3.

What a pain. Seems it would be easier just to pain attention! :)

    UPDATE 2:

Toyota now says a faulty LKA switch is what is causing the camera not to talk to the computer... $400 and a 2 weeks until delivery.

    Luckily I get to borrow a relative's Honda S2000 until it's fixed.

I'm glad insurance is on the hook for this. I'm only annoyed at the time it's taken and Toyota's inability to fix their own vehicle in a timely manner

Lol! Of course you pay attention... these are driving aids like ABS and power steering. Cars don't need them, they just help reduce accidents and fatigue.

Anti Braking System! :) I learned how to stop and not skid. But it's not taught anymore.
The more "assistance" one gets, the lazier they become.
My van was my first vehicle with cruise, and power windows and locks.
Now I don't leave home without them! :) When the servo went out, I had to learn to keep
a steady foot again. It was worth the $70 and 15 minutes to replace it!

    UPDATE 3:

The new switch didn't fix the problem so a new camera was ordered ($1600). That came in a week later and i was told yesterday it did not fix the problem. The dealership is working it out with Toyota HQ(?) to diagnose the issue.

I'm starting to think a wiring harness was cut during the windshield replacement. What else could it be? Could the ECU have been damaged somehow during a recalibration?

So the lesson learned is, let Toyota replace the windshield! :)

    UPDATE 4:

Talked with tech today, they aren't charging me for the switch ($400) or the camera ($1600). They seem to believe it's the ECU ($1200). Keep in mind, if insurance wasn't going to cover this, I wouldn't do it.

The ECU is fed by a number of systems in order to operate the LKA. Wipers can't be on high, brake can't be used, speed must be >45mph, high beams can't be on, etc. Techstream is showing all other systems are functioning normally. Even the camera (old and new) shows its acquiring the lines in the road, but the LKA won't activate, it turns on then off as if it's being told not to. At first they thought it was the switch, it wasn't, then Toyota said it was the camera. The shop foreman disagreed, but they told him to replace the camera so he did, same function, now he's returning it. He seems to believe it's the ECU. Problem is only ECU he can find is in CA (I'm in VA) and it won't be here until Friday. Looks like it'll be another week with the S2000.

If nothing else, I hope the one person who had this problem in the future finds this thread and it helps them puzzle it out. I hate reading threads online where I have the same problem they did and they never tell how it was resolved.

.... and yes, if you have a car with these kinds of systems in it, only let the dealer fix it. This would be MUCH less of a headache if shops didn't point fingers at one another.
