"Flood" vehicles get dispersed for obvious reasons. A thurough inspection will determine if a candidate vehicle is being passed off/flipped.

You have to be a little careful that the used vehicle although bought in Ca. needs to be CARB qualified (not brought in to Ca. from out of state). Maryland should be good. We do not see too much report of salt damage, so it's a little funny to go to Ca. for that reason.

Ok, I see. I used to live in upstate NY years ago, and remember the rust on vehicles, especially on my old Z cars. I'd consider jwtracy's advice and look at a closer CARB state without the salt and rust issues, like Maryland. I traveled to California to purchase my Prius, but that was mostly due to supply on the non dealer market. The downside is that many of the Prii there was listed above book value and higher than elsewhere in the country (like Maryland).

I'm guessing that regardless of where you purchase the Prius, the hybrid battery will die before rust becomes a problem. Please keep this thread updated on your search.

The other thing I would say is that batt reliability has seemed better to me on Gen3, we do not hear too many people saying they got a new Gen3 batt under warranty, like we used to hear more for Gen2. That is anecdotal but my observation. Gen2 although perhaps more solid build quality, had some fixable issues like HV battery discharge to zero on empty gaso tank.

that wasn't the case when my 08 ran out of gas, so i'm not sure why some did and some didn't.

i would say that we aren't seeing too many gen 3 batteries because we aren't seeing too many 2008 and 2009's.
just a time/mileage thing. but agree, it's all anecdotal.

Having done the move-to-California-from-a-salty-place… I’d either skip getting a Prius until I got there, or I’d get one in NY for NY usage and sell it before moving and call it a Practice Prius.

In other words I wouldn’t go through the hassle of “importing” a car to California if it had been through a NY winter or two. Rust never sleeps once it gets started.
