Stopped at a stop sign on my way home today and when I tried to accelerate nothing happened. Was pointing slightly uphill, and started drifting back very slowly. Several attempts to start, no go. Went to Park, then back to drive, nothing. Shift to reverse, no response of the accelerator. Turn car off, drive, no Accel. After several iterations of turning car off and on, finally goes. Note that the car gets into drive/reverse, just will not accelerate.

Another stop sign a mile away...same thing. Two iterations of turning car off before it takes. Had to go up big hill to get to stop sign, acceleration seems off.

Next stop sign, no problem, but I do notice that it still seems like the acceleration is less.

Get it home, won't go into EV mode in driveway. Does accelerate from stop several times without issue.

Any thoughts as to what might be up?

Where there any messages on the display? Any warning lights? How long had you been driving? How much battery?

I'd be taking it to the dealer - they'll be able to read any stray fault codes.

I didn't notice anything on the dash...but I was blocking traffic and focused on resolving the issue at hand. But, I am fairly certain there was nothing showing any issue at all. I had only gone 1/4 of a mile to the first stop sign from where I started the trip. The EV battery was at least 2/3 full.

I thought the same thing... I'll report back anything that I find out.

Car is malfunctioning. Car is under warranty. Go straight to the dealer. Do not pass "Go." Do not collect $200. Then again, you won't need to pay either. But get it there before it strands you. My guess is that it's something in the drive by wire throttle.

    THIS.

Do the current models disable the throttle if the brake is already pushed.......in D and N......and won't rev at all in P ?

If that is the case, maybe it "thinks" that the brake is pushed when it isn't......or it thinks it is not in gear ??

39k, no aftermarket anything. Just had it inspected and all recalls done for July inspection. First issue I've encountered.

Hopefully the dealer can find and fix the problem. If not, ask if they’ve checked not only for diagnostic trouble codes, but also for Vehicle Control History events, in both the hybrid control system and the SRS, as described in my August 2017 and July 2019 postings.

Back from service appointment. Zero problems with car, completely healthy.

I did not press for the logs...did mention them. I don't do well with demanding things :).

The car seems absolutely fine. After a few test drives in the driveway over the weekend I drove it to work and back...no problems. Drove it today...no problems. But,I suspect it won't be the last time it crops up.

On a side note, the dealership was extremely good about it. The tech that did the work actually called me after I left as he was continuing to consider the problem after I left...double checking service bulletins and whatnot. And, they waved the diagnostic fee...so in that regard I'm very happy.

If/when it happens again I'll be better prepared to deal with it, and to be more aware of what's going on...

Those intermittent malfunctions can be extremely hard to chase down, especially when it's something you've never seen before.

Yeah, couldn't agree more. It is a tough thing. Just hoping to get something out for other's to reference if it becomes something that shows up from time to time.

I don't think so, but it is kind of hard to tell. In my case the car was fine until I stopped, and then it would not resume. He seemed to have the problem while moving. I have no idea what the equivalent statuses were in my case...unsure how he has access to that info. Regardless, it could very well be two slightly different manifestations of the same root cause problem.

I think I've read every Gen 4 post since Gen 4 was released in 2015 - never heard that one (but there are many more PRIUS than just on PriusChat - the vast majority in Japan).

Do you put the car in "N" with parking brake on or "P" when you stop at a stop sign or leave it in "D" ?
ISTR reading previously of some problem with the shifter switch but don't remember which Gen it was.

Probably not the shifter then  fingers crossed it was just a glitch in the matrix and doesn't re-occur (y)

My 2016 has started having the same problem. It happened a month ago briefly and I thought it was a fluke. Then it happened Tuesday when it was super hot and humid outside. It also happened this evening. Both instances have happened in the evening. I noticed the vent under my rear seats was loud but not too loud. I tried P to D but it would only accelerate if I put in R. I turned off the car and then it accelerated in D. I’m wondering if my electric motor could be overheating. Do the vents under the rear seats act to cool the electric motor? The factory warranty just ended in July.
