Tire Pressure Monitoring System

    We have been Prius owners for a short period of time now. Based on postings and past experience with OEM tires, we are planning to replace the OEM Goodyear Integrity tires with ComforTreds. If we do so, given that we have the tire pressure monitoring system on our Prius, would we be needing to incur costs to have the pressure monitoring system re-activated, or would a Sears or other tire dealer be doing so as standard procedure? The Sears store has a sale on the tire for $82/tire. We would be prepared to purchase the tires at Sears and have them mounted at the Toyota dealer if that will be a better process in regard to the monitoring system sensors. Thanks for your feedback and insights with this matter.

    Assuming that whomever does the mounting TAKES CARE TO PROTECT THE TRANSMITTERS inside the wheels, then all you have do to is hit the reset button underneath the dash on the driver's side - see your owner's manual. No need to visit the Toyota dealer. My experience with Sears is less than sterling, but to each his own.

    I had our Costco Michelins mounted on new wheels [Sport Editions from Tire Rack - same exact specs as the OEMs], though not by Costco, because they wouldn't do it unless the transmitters were installed. I kept the original wheels and tires [currently bagged in our storage cage], and am running without the TPMS, which I consider an expensive complexity that is simply unnecessary [have you priced the transmitters from your friendly dealer? Better not mess one up]. The warning light comes on and stays on, and I solved that problem by putting a small piece of black tape over the light.

    When it comes time to sell the car, I'll put the OEM wheels/tires back on the car, reset the system, and the new owner gets the original tires [however worthless they are] and the wheels with the transmitters.

    Anyway, the point is, there is no need to visit the dealer - you can reset the system from the car when new tires are installed, presuming that the installer hasn't damaged one of the very expensive thingees...my solution is to forget the whole TPMS thing. I gather from feedback that this upsets some people in the "Prius nation" - if you're worried about the TPMS, just get the installer to use appropriate caution.

    Thanks for the guidance in regard to the tire pressure monitoring system - still examining the owner's manual after these initial days of being an owner, and must have not arrived at that section yet. Much appreciated also is your suggestion about being selective as to who does the tire mounting & balancing. We'll be careful about that too! Best wishes for the weekend to you.

    Thank you - the feedback is helpful and consistent with a comment from one of the Sears service counter staff at our local Sears offered this week when I stopped back in the store to obtain a price quote. The counter person said that they have some inexperienced folks working in back yet they would try to have one of the more experienced staff work on the vehicle, given that I asked about the tire pressure monitoring system. We'll be 'shopping around' for a suitable place to have the tires mounted and balanced. Will still consider Sears yet perhaps one of our local independent service centers would be more suitable. Much appreciated - both your taking the time to respond and for the feedback.

    It might be nice to use someone that may actually remember you when you come in again, "ifs thats possible" if you live in the big city, that may not be possible.

    If you go to tirerack.com, you can find installers that they use. You can buy tires from them and have them drop shipped to the installer of your choice. There is feedback from previous customers on these places. I find that a good way to check out local places for tire services whether I am dealing with a Tirerack install or for anything else.
