What are you paying for electricity (price per kWh)?

As of June 2019 the average energy price in the United States is $0.139 cents per kWh and regular unleaded gasoline $2.819. (Source: Average energy prices for the United States, regions, census divisions, and selected metropolitan areas : Midwest Information Office : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

The discussion has raged on over the years re when it's no longer economically advantageous to charge vs. using fuel. I think many of us here know what that tipping point is. At the moment, with regular unleaded fuel at $2.55/ per gallon in GA, charging is significantly cheaper than using fuel. By my calculations it's approximately 52%-77% cheaper to power the car on electric than fuel depending on energy costs for that particular month with the assumption of $2.55/per gallon. I understand the choice to charge vs. using fuel is a personal one and it's not all about money; however, I am very conscious of that tipping point where electric costs exceed fuel.

In GA I'm currently paying as low as $0.044 per kWh or as high as $0.097 per kWh depending on time of year and usage for each month (economies of scale). I am not on a special TOU program.

I'm interested to know how much members on the forums are paying for energy. What are your energy costs? What are your thoughts about cost of electricity relative to fuel? Would you no longer charge your Prime if fuel costs dropped to $0.75/per gallon. I realize this isn't likely in our lifetime but wanted to throw it out there. Our neighbors to the north are welcome to chime in.;)

I do not own a plug in vehicle (yet), but am sensitive to the issues associated with them. I think electric lcomotion is the future, maybe not as near as many would like to think, but it is coming as we use up our oil reserves and performance of the EV is far superior in many different aspects. So I see some kind of EV powered vehicle in my near future. Probably PHEV, but maybe BEV with small range for local use.

In any case, I want to pipe in with my electricity cost. I live in Massachusetts and pay $0.12 - $0.15 per KWhr. Hovering around average. My town has its own electric company (we are not part of National Grid company) and they do not generate any electricity, but rather purchase it. They tend to buy more eco-friendly energy (it's actually a concern in our community) and they do own their own equipment for infrastructure maintenance and construction. We have very reliable service from them. When after a hurricane next town over had power out for almost a month in some spots, our town was back to 100% after 72 hours. They are now developing municipal fiber internet and I can't wait to get rid of Comcast, but that's a different story.

You are fortunate. I am at the eastern end of the state and pay $ 0.209/kWh.

As I discussed in my Prius Chat post from Sept 4, 2018, this makes my cost per mile to be about the same for electricity or gasoline:
Energy Consumption: A Data Point | PriusChat

At $ 0.15/kWh, you have to be way ahead of the cost of gasoline and -- as you note -- you're also eco-friendly.

That is why I always schedule my Prime to charge after 7pm :D

Gas in my area today is at 1.179/L Cdn ...around 3.36/G US

Yes, we are luck with the electric service. We have our own trucks and crew and we own some transformers and the utility is very sensitive to community input as far as energy sources. We try to by mostly hydro and other renewables.

And as a bonus, we own our poles and wires, so we can install fiber and give Comcast some competition. Another story for another thread, but our electric utility is rolling out gigabit fiber internet in some neighborhoods by the end of this year.

Currently $0.195/kWh including everything (fees, taxes, surcharges, etc.) With grocery gas points applied, our gas price have been less than $2.30/gal for more than two years now. It is more economical to run HV than EV for me, but to be ecological I charge every night. I am hoping to reduce the electric cost by installing solar panel some time this year.;)

1.5 cents/kWh. That may or may not increase in 30-40 years.

I believe the true cost of burning gasoline is paid by society as a whole, and children, the elderly, those with respiratory issues, and others that live and work near heavy traffic patterns especially.
As such, I will continue to pay to drive a zero emission vehicle regardless of the cost.

9¢/kWh CAD (no TOU... only two tiers depending on total 2 month usage).

Gas ranges from $1.35-$1.45/litre or $3.73-$4.00/gal. By comparison, western WA state ranges from $2.55-$3.40/gal.

Gas basically has to be 25¢/litre for gas to be cheaper and that’s never going to happen (even the last recession in 2008 brought gas prices to 75¢/litre in all of Canada).

FYI, there is a thread with graphs. @noonm did some work for you guys.

This month was 18.55¢/kWh for me in CT. Last month was 19.05¢/kWh (I changed suppliers which saved me a little). I get free charging in the garage I park in for work, so I should see a minimal impact on my electric usage. Thinking about getting solar panels and also getting some Tesla Solar Walls (instead of a generator).

In my area, the rate is 8.7 cents per kWh.

As a side note, we generate approximately 4.7-6.0 MWatts per year of which the Prime consumes 1.8 MWatts. I guess the experience would be better if the rate was a bit higher since our utility will pay no more than 8.7c for every KW we sell them. In the big scheme of things, lower rates are good for the local economy.

$0.169 per kwh plus tax and fees. But I have 10.375 kwhp solar. So I only pay if I use more than I generate. In 2019 I generated 8.27 mega watts and used 6.17 mega watts. That means I havd over 2100 kwh to use this winter so far.

My Prius Prime is covered so electricity is always cheaper than gas.

$0.09/kw. I also have solar. Installed last Aug. and have generated just over 7 mega watts since my install.. Need to calculate my usage for the year.

10.4 cents/kWh on first tier (first 300kWh/month in summer, 480 in winter), 14.9 cents on second tier.

Including all per-KWh fees, it works out to around 14c/KWh. Here in Austin TX, it’s a tiered system — the more you use, the higher your rate, like income tax. So, more in the summer than winter, but average for us is about 14c/KWh.

Electricity averages around .169/kWh for me. Since Sparkie's been averaging 6.5 mi/kWh, my electric consumption has gone down. (y)
