I broke down a few days ago. The MAF went bad and i lost power, got to a gas station on battery, tried to restart the engine a few times, and got locked out. I just set up techstream and reset the codes and was able to try starting the engine again (ive replaced the MAF) but it still fails after maybe 15-30 seconds. It gives me a code saying fuel run out.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong still? Did the maf have anything to do with breaking down (its had a check engine code for a month with no problems)? Did my fuel pump go bad?

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Don't try to start the vehicle too many times, else you will run the HV battery down and cause a bigger headache.

Did you record the OBD2 codes (DTCs) prior to clearing them?

Can you post the current set of DTCs?

    1. How much fuel is in the tank now?
    2. Try disconnecting the 12V battery for a few minutes to clear existing fault codes, then reconnect.
    3. Check the wiring harness connector to the MAF sensor to make sure it is secure.
    4. Can the car be started now?

Its giving me p3190 and p0a0f codes right now, when it broke down it had p0101 p0102 p0113 p3193 and p0a0f. I already tried clearing all the codes with tech stream and then the engine would only run maybe 15-30 secs and then turn off and give me the current codes.

This post decribes exactly what happened to me when i broke down: Symptoms of failed Mass Air Flow sensor on 2009 Prius...? | PriusChat

As far as gas, i filled up 150-200 miles ago (my combination meter doesnt work 100% of the time, so not all the miles are logged) but the gas gauge still says i have over half a tank. I know the gas gauge can be a bit off but can it really be THAT off? (If you think gas is the problem)

And i can start the car, but im doing it very sparingly as i dont want the hybrid battery to drain. Its been on one bar since it broke down

OK. The engine spinning for 15-30 seconds is just because MG1 is spinning the engine. The engine is not actually working. If you question that, then depress the accelerator pedal when you think the engine is running and see if it speeds up. If it does not then the engine is not working.

DTC P0A0F (engine failed to start) has the ECM and the SFI system as the possible trouble areas. Are you able to get the three digit info code associated with that?

    Yes, i listed them in
Yeah i have tried depressing the gas pedal with no results so i guess its not working.

Would i find that code through techstream under ecm and sfi? (Im not going to be able to get back to my car till monday evening)

Also im in a gen 2 btw

Have you tested the health and connections to the 12 V battery ?
    If not, you probably should.

Whatever Techstream calls the engine ECU is the category you are looking for.

Was it fully charged before being installed (or immediately after) ?

The Optima has a reputation for high "infant mortality".

New parts can fail right after being installed; that includes batteries too.
It only takes a minute to check it.

It has been working fine since i got it.
But i can still turn the car on and my bluetooth fm transmitter always reads 12-14 volts. Would a bad battery affect anything really other than being able to turn the car on?

    Yes it can.

A weak battery can cause errors to appear in the various computer systems.
They might come "ON" but not function correctly.

While it seems unlikely that is your problem this time, it is so easy to check it......or have somebody like Auto Zone check it for you......that it is something that you should not dismiss automatically just because the battery is "new".

Loose or corroded main battery cables can cause similar problems.

When multiple different codes come up suddenly.......that logically should not be related to each other......you should always consider what is common to ALL of those systems. Often about the only thing that is common is the battery (or battery system).

I wish there was a way to charge the HV battery beyond disassembly and running hobby chargers for hours/days. Deep discharging that battery - or just running it to the lowest the computer will allow it to go - and letting it sit could cause a mess of battery issues.

So the engine is turning over but is not starting. The usual fuel/air/spark and "what happened last" troubleshooting applies.

Revisit why you believe the MAF went bad. Can you test/compare the old and new MAFs? Ensure that the MAF failure isn't a false symptom caused by something else.

Air - I'd start here because that's what changed last. test the new MAF, inspect the MAF installation - no rags stuck in there, hoses left disconnected, check intake manifold vacuum pressure... may sound silly but overlooking the simple things has cost me more hours of my life than I'd care to admit.

Quick fuel check - does the exhaust smell like gas after an attempt to run? if it does, go after spark. if not, go after fuel.

Spark - Get an inline tester to ensure that spark is happening, or try a small bit of starting fluid to see if it kicks. If you have neither, check all the fuses/connections/ground-wires/etc, remove a spark plug, ground it to the cylinder head, and do a visual check with it trying to turn over.

Fuel - I have never checked... is there a schraeder valve on the fuel rail? check to see that there's any spray when you press it, after an attempt to start the engine does the exhaust smell like fuel? Can you disconnect a fuel line, run it to a suitable container, and see if the fuel pump is delivering? Check the injectors... the fuses for things that make the injectors work - check the connectors for the injectors to see if they're getting whatever voltages/signals they need.

I think there is. Well, you still need to open the the battery case and install a harness, but the Prolong charger supposedly makes charging/balancing more convenient. No personal experience, but a lot here have.

Thanks. Ill use this to troubleshoot. But so you are saying it is possible to recharge the hybrid battery with a bit of dissasembly and a hobby charger?

The prolong is not a hobby charger it’s a bulk charger. It will charge the entire battery at the same time though, and run the battery cooling fan while it’s doing it.

This is the next easy thing to try. If the engine fires up with the starting fluid then you should immediately run a forced charge. It's kinda a two man job to do so. One guy needs to keep spraying the starting fluid while the other puts the car in drive and floors both the gas and brake. Just a minute of charging will get the battery out of the danger zone.

Isn’t playing with starting fluid a little dangerous? Like 2nd-3rd degree burn dangerous?
