Sorry for your loss and dash cam is a must this day. The built in camera for TSS should be able to replay that IMO.

Since no one else mentioned it, this is why you should keep your wheels straight while waiting to turn left. That way if you're rear-ended you don't get pushed into oncoming traffic. Hope everyone is OK.

Good advice, but from the video, it looks more like a combo of the curve of the road plus the car being slightly angled to the left. Also bad timing of when the truck rear-ending the stopped car just as she was crossing its path.

 

Yes, it's very good advice, but if someone hits you in the right rear, you're still going into oncoming traffic. It surely lessens the degree though

 

True, but it looked to me like the truck veered right on the curve and hit the right rear of the SUV, sending it forward at an angle. Wouldn't matter which way those wheels were turned in this case, that SUV was going into traffic regardless. It did look like the wheels were straight.

I had the same thought; when you're hit from behind, regardless of the angle, I think you'd tend to go the direction the front wheels are pointing.

 

It's hard to tell from the video, but it looks like the cars front wheels might be pointing slightly left. I don't think we can tell if getting pushed into traffic was unavoidable or not. Getting rear ended by a truck is an unusual situation, and it has so much more mass than a car.

 

Wow, sorry to hear that. Do you have some exterior shots to show the damage? Curious to see how the car held up, I know it was mentioned it was totaled, which is a shame, but at least you won’t have to deal with driving a repaired car.

I also second the comment about dash cams. I have a 2-channel BlackVue in my car as I drive a lot and had some rotten luck with my parked car being hit a few years ago, so I was DONE and got a dash cam. No incidents since then. Guess it works as a deterrent as well.

The only advice I would give is make sure it is hardwired and has a decent parking mode capability, assuming this is important to you. When I was shopping a few years ago, the Korean models were considered quite a bit better than the Chinese models, particularly with parking mode capture. BlackVue was one of the best at the time. Mine is a 2015 model (DR650GW-2CH) which is 1080p front camera and 720p rear. Newer models record in 4k, which is better for reading plates. A worthy bit of insurance, IMO, if it can be your impartial witness saving you from one messy incident.

 

I must agree that the wheels looked straight either until the moment of impact, or possibly until just an instant before, as if a rear-viewing driver reflexively and unsuccessfully tried to goose it for escape.

A dead-on square hit should send it in the direction of the steering wheels, but an extreme corner hit will also apply a torque tending to twist the vehicle away.

 

hope all is okay im shocked the conversation continued though no reaction whatsoever? Was the semi truck driver texting and driving, quite infuriating to watch aren't there weight restrictions on those types of streets anyways why was such a large semi truck on that residential road?
