Right, that is part of the reason I mentioned start in CA. Topic is drifting here...

New construction in places like that would do well with ground sourced heat pumps.

It gets as cold as mid-20s on the coldest winter nights. No problem with our air sourced heat pumps.

Everyone should do this where able. We do as well capturing radiant heat during the day through large double paned windows for greenhouse effect.

Thermal mass heating should be incorporated into new construction. One still needs PV on the roof to go net zero for all home energy use and personal transportation.

Grid or home battery storage will be part of the next stages in our region.

If somebody wants to go net zero, nothing is stopping them. My opinion - this doesn't need to be mandated.

Indeed. Hope being mandated didn't sound suggested.

Some things are better suited to be done at grid level.

The site was set for D.C area, but the selection didn't change much when I switched to here. I see the smaller cook tops are close in price, but in my experience, kitchens with less than 30in of cook top space have had ranges.

I shouldn't have used old fashioned. I was comparing induction to radiant electrics. The 30in induction cook tops aren't much more than them, but I was just looking at the 36in and those have noticable price difference.

To take advantage of the closer priced cook tops, I'd just need to spend thousands to remodel out the range.;)
It is the place to push them, but banning NG in new construction if it is already in decline there isn't really proactive pushing.

It wasn't too many years back you couldn't ever find one under $2,000.

Honestly, natural gas should be banned from households of its explosiveness. For example, this bus in Sweden:

If you've ever seen the aftermath of a natural gas explosion in a building, it literally looks like a bomb went off. IMO, the convenience of gas heating/drying/cooking is outweighed by sleeping on a potential bomb.

That's a stretch. Homes never burn up due to electrical faults, so that is clearly safer? We should probably ban Christmas trees as well since those are also lethal death traps.

Last time I checked, electrical fires don't launch your roof 50 feet into the air like this:

Just to emphasize the point, here are some other fun "benefits" of natural gas:

The probability of this occurrence is so low I won't worry about it. When airplanes crash into homes that is also catastrophic and I don't worry about that either. Same for tornadoes and large meteors.

Yeah. Feels like a well kept kitchen upgrade secret.

Many don’t know how affordable they are now, and many have never heard of them. Precision temperature control, energy miserly, easy to clean, and even midrange models with advanced features like auto sizing. We got that on our 36” five burner induction cooktop at only $800 a few months ago.

Never see them advertised and they are not marketed or carried well in stores.

My son and his wife are remodeling an older home in Pasadena. The only appliance they are keeping is an induction cook top. It works great.

Well, the 36in selection on the Home Depot site has gone from 11 to 17, but one of those units you listed doesn't show up for my area.

Ans I suspect the West Coast is getting all the selection. An induction cook top probably isn't in the store here. Some small appliances, like portable single burners, are starting to show up.

I'll consider them, and have have. Two years ago, an induction rice cooker was around $100 more, an increase of a third over the resistant element one we ended up with. It was through Amazon, so regional weirdness shouldn't be an issue.

Home Depot won’t let you order online - you might be on to something - regional inventory issues, it seems.

Our induction cooktop was not in stock in our local area. Still, we were able to buy it from Home Depot online, so maybe was in a warehouse within <1000 miles.

A couple of weeks ago I saw that Home Depot finally started to carry a Ryobi 40V DC to 120V AC inverter I had been waiting for months to show up in local inventory or online. For some reason it showed up in east coast stores first. However when I tried to buy it online it would not let me. Not sure if this is a new or old thing that if something is not available in the region they won’t ship it to you.

That was the first time I had a problem ordering something online and I ordered several things from Home Depot online in the past that were not carried in stores.
