Someone rear-ended my parked Prius 4 at a high rate of speed. (They left, but given the damage and the fact the impact propelled my car 12 feet forward, we are assuming a high rate of speed). Trying to figure out if this is likely to be a total. I would hate to get a car back after this much damage. It's a 4 with the solar roof package, and it was in clean condition with just minor scrapes to the front fender (like all of them have). The hatchback door is sprung and shifted off to the side, the back passenger door won't open, and the glass in the hatchback is gone (it made it all the way to my front seats).

Any advice would be appreciated. Trying to figure what to plan for. Prius from Back.jpg Prius from Side.jpg

Did you call the police? Is there security cameras that may have captured the incident?

Thanks for responding! Yes to both. I have a police report and the owner of a cafe across the street from my house has security cameras. I need to go over and find out if she had usable footage. I wasn't at fault, since I wasn't even in the car, so if we can find the person who did it, we will, but that might be tough. It was 1:30 in the morning and they actually drove off! There was a debris field for blocks where pieces kept falling off their vehicle.

Just be prepared when your insurance company totals the car. Don’t let them low ball you on the replacement cost. They are going to offer you a poor payoff so get some back up pricing from similar cars that are for sale. You don’t have to accept their offer. Use your negotiating skills.

That is likely to be totaled by the insurance company. The unit body is damaged, the rear hatch is broken, a fender, lights, damaged door, rear bumper and crash pads, etc. Expect a total and don't accept a lowball price for the car.

Ironic that the crush box mounting the rear bumper reinforcement appears to have crushed ... not at all ....

My opinion, always have to start with this statement as sometimes others will comment if not.
This is absolutely a total, there is no way your insurance company will try to fix this based on body damage to the left rear quarter panel, roof, hatch.
As others have said, be extremely firm with your insurance company as they will try to low ball its worth.
Unfortunate that this happened to such a clean vehicle, but glad no one was in the vehicle to get hurt. Start shopping for a new one ASAP. Be aware that costs associated with storage in a tow yard(which are stupidly high) and rental cost may sometimes be deducted from your offer for the total loss payment.
    Welcome to Prius chat!

Thanks so much! I am already gathering that information. It's already telling that for determining the 75% damaged threshold (at which they total it) they are using the NADA "Clean Retail" figure, but for any potential payout they will use the "NADA Average Retail" figure - a difference of some $3,000.

If you have recent pictures of the car, service records, etc., use them to make a case that your car is above average retail. I got $17,200 for a totaled 2009 Honda Fit that had 29k miles, and for which I paid $16.300 new.

Make sure they are not making estimates compared to the base package prius because yours is not the base package

Collect them all, for help in identifying the model and color of the offender. And if a suspect vehicle is located, these pieces will go a long way towards confirming it.

I don't remember, because it had been parked there for more than a day. (I work at home and don't drive daily.) Does that matter? The car was in park and it was on a level surface.

1:30am sounds like drunk driver, which figures the hit and run.
They will at least get failure to report an accident.

Is your street a cut thru from a main road to another main road?
If not, it is probably a local driver within a few blocks.

Yes hopefully you can pick up the pieces and figure what make and model hit you.
    And make their insurance payout.

Better get over to the cafe, some security cams only save footage for 24 hours.

    Good luck with the outcome.
