I read your OP again and think you should replace the O2 sensor with a Denso part. That might be the problem if they put on the part wrong or that part has failed. The 1 second hesitation thing....it's not a catalytic problem. It's normally an air fuel sensor or 02 sensor type of problem.

also another thing this car had a combination black out in january. then, never again. until today, both times i reset the 12v battery and it was fine. i also had a blackou on the 06 in april and its been fine.

so it seems the combination meters fails sometimes without dying completely?

Yes they just start to black out and over time, they will black out completely.

ok makes sense, one time i bought a 2008 from a used dealer, next day i go to the car and the combination meter dies... same dealer sold me another car and went bankrupt without registering the car to me, all scammers....
i am so tired of these prius, i will get rid of all of them and just get a 2010 for my personal use next year.

im sure if i go to arts automotive or luscious garage to resolver this it will be hundreds
so i will just drive it like this with the check engine light on and check if there are new codes every month or so....

I recommend you meet up with the bay area guys when they have their meet up parties (I don't go cause they don't want beer there). They are a very talented crew of enthusiasts. They may help you fix your problems for a lot less money than you think.

A combination meter repair is $150 if you buy the part from texashybridbatteries.com Matt is a very respected member here and he does the refurbishing on those units.

We have beer at the meet ups:).

We crack ‘em open after successfully completing jobs;).

So does this mean we’ll have more in attendance next round:whistle:?

    Come on up(y).

No, I was just making fun of how this is a beer free meetup. I only drink when I'm bowling or watching football. Other times, I actually have to concentrate on what I'm doing and not drink.....

So I'm still too far away to go, although it would be a great experience, I'll just have to wait until I move closer up north (when real estate prices drop to $500k on a 3 bedroom home)

You won't be able to ship a cat directly to California. I had mine shipped to a friend in Texas then he sent it to me. So far cars been smoged twice and passed. Never looked under the car.
But if it drives fine leave the problem until it's smog time.

Depends on where you want to live;).

In Fairfield where I live, you can find exactly what you’re looking for at the price point mentioned:).

    quick update:

I swapped a 05 catalytic converter that was fine, to a 2008 whose catalytic converter was stolen.
Then the 2008 got the check engine light on immediately with code P0420.
To this day i still dont know if the problem was the catalytic converter from the 05 or something to do with the process of swapping.

I have a guy coming with techstream to see if he can find the cause of the problem, but i guess he will find the codes but not the reason behind right? any hints on what should i ask him to check?

he is not a mechanic, he is just a nice friend who replaces HV batteries.

the 2008 was worth 5000 prior to this event.
if the catalysis is the problem is now worth much less, maybe 3000.

i need to know what is the problem because there is a lot of money on the line.

i am also considering spending $120 going to luscious garage just to have some expert look at it and tell me clearly: " Your problem is X"

otherwise i have to advertise the car for $3000 only because there is a bad code and no diagnosis.

Normally yes, but the old one was cut from the car in a completely unapproved manner. The thieves were likely not very careful about it so there might have been something that needed to be welded back together.

this is the data from techstream on the 08 prius who received the catalytic from the 05 and has the check engine light on.

based on this can you tell if the catalytic is bad or its the o2 sensors or something to do with the installation when they swapped it ?
the same catalytic was fine on the 05, and once installed in the 08 the check engine light went immediately on with code p0420

Why not go to another garage to have this diagnosed?
You seems don't want to spend some bucks buying the sensor O2 sensors to see what happens next.

You might want to take this to another shop to have them look at it. If the previous shop did a poor job of welding the leaks will cause P0420 code also. They should have just unbolted exhaust system and bolted the other one right in. No need for welding.
