Hey Prius nerds! Please give me your advice. I am debating on repairing my 2006 Prius or just getting a new car (probably a prius). It has 128,791 miles. I paid to get it diagnosed by my local mechanic and these are the codes and costs associated. My question is do you think I should pay to repair or invest in a new prius. I'm also debating getting a second quote which will cost me another $120. Are these prices outrageous? I don't know if my Prius needs a new rotor and brakes, also. Thank you for your time!

Symptoms: clicking noise when car is parked; all lights on except red triangle; when I turn the car on it has rolled a few times before I press brake again- freaky.

    COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE: P1116, P1121, C1256, C1391, B1432, B1442

1- Replace ABS ACCUMULATOR and Stroke Sensor, Bleed System = $2,943.00 (Parts + Labor)
2- Replace Front Rotor & Rear Wheel Cylinders, Bleed System = $458.96
    3- Front Brake Job= $294.98
    4- Rear Brake Job= $284.99
    5- Programming- ECM/BCM Flash or Reprogramming Charge = $250
6- Replace Inverter Coolant Pump, Coolant Sensor, Bleed System - $1,006.82

I’m guessing New Orleans by your zip code? Who is quoting these prices, the dealer?

Seems like person wanting to fix your car is more interested in stealing every last penny from you than just fixing what's specifically wrong. I'd research fraud laws and report them to your Attorney General and then go find a mechanic who is more interested in having loyal customers and getting you back on the road for the lowest cost possible.

The Gen 2 has a strong following on here as being tanklike and a super value ... but any 13 year old car is probably going to fit best with an owner who is comfortable DIYing some of that stuff rather than paying shop rates.

Call dealer with your VIN and find out which actuator you have. Go on eBay or car-part.com and find one used for about $200 or $250.

My mechanic installs for $250 so I'd imagine you could find someone to do the job in the $300-$350 range? Not that hard.

Brakes are $300 all around parts/labor not $600.

I don't believe the ECM flash is necessary. And if I remember correctly the inverter pump is less than an hour job and very cheap part (on Amazon).

With the right mechanic that wants to make $500 for a 1 day job I think you can get all your parts for around $500. So $1000 grand total which is not bad. But requires doing some research and mechanic hunting.

    Sounds like a flood car............

1- Replace ABS ACCUMULATOR and Stroke Sensor, Bleed System = $2,943.00 (Parts + Labor)
2- Replace Front Rotor & Rear Wheel Cylinders, Bleed System = $458.96
    3- Front Brake Job= $294.98

    5- Programming- ECM/BCM Flash or Reprogramming Charge = $250
6- Replace Inverter Coolant Pump, Coolant Sensor, Bleed System - $1,006.82

Why #6? P1116 and 1121 have nothing to do with that system....

My neighborhood mechanic is quoting these prices. I thought they were honest dudes but now I'm rethinking that.

This car hasn't flooded. That would be a whole other ball game. The P-numbers showed up on the Auto Zone diagnostic reading originally and they said those parts needed to be replaced. The car makes this loud clicking noise when parked and I think it's the coolant pump, but not sure.

Thank you for the advice. I will get a second and third quote and see what those numbers look like. I'd love for it to be $1000 and not $6!

I've never worked on a car myself and don't mind it necessarily, but I don't have any tools, etc. I think I will try to get another quote before going the DIY route. Thank you!

A salvaged unit- like for all of these parts? or the ABS accumulator. Is that the same as the accuator? Thanks!

Regarding "Programming- ECM/BCM Flash or Reprogramming Charge = $250"
There is no re-programming, only some reading of codes and actuations for ABS
and bleeding the new brake cylinders etc. which requires a good scantool.
On #6, just take the cap off the coolant res. while in ready mode look and see if
there's fluid movement it's ok. Struts??? my front struts were bad at 75k.

I think these mechanics don't actually want to work on my car. They said I should just sell it. I don't think they know what they are doing and so they are price gouging instead. Thank you!

How is any part of this fraudulent? They have provided a very high quote for services, but the consumer doesn’t have to agree to those services or those prices.

I would find another mechanic (or two) for some competing quotes, because those prices and scope seem excessive based in the information given.

Look at the pad thickness and rotor condition. Also, ask the mechanic who gave you the quote for the work why this is needed? They should be able to provide specifications and how close you are to not meeting them (don’t accept “we always do this at this many miles”).

Those prices reflect how much they do not want to do the work, so I won't pick at their high prices. I will pick at their list of what needs to be done. We would need to see the vehicle to be sure. This seems to show that they're not familiar with Prius.

Of everything listed, #2-5 are likely unnecessary. #1 is a very common and expensive issue. I'm unsure about #6.

I vote that you sell this car. This car will be a money pit for you because you aren't equipped or experienced to DIY (or keep mechanics honest.)

For each line here's the DIY cost using rockauto.com prices (with time guesstimates because I research and go slow)

1- Replace ABS ACCUMULATOR and Stroke Sensor, Bleed System = $2,943.00 (Parts + Labor)
I replaced the ABS module with a $110 used unit, a laptop and a $20 cable, plus six or seven hours of my time. I got really lucky with that junkyard pull. Remanufactured units cost $720. Dealer cost is $1200 for new.

2- Replace Front Rotor & Rear Wheel Cylinders, Bleed System = $458.96
Front rotors are $25/pair, wheel cylinders are $13/pair, repair #1 is already flushing the system (no time spent, included in #3 and #4)

    3- Front Brake Job= $294.98
Pads are $10. If calipers are replaced they cost $66/pair (plus $60 refundable core) - three hours time

    4- Rear Brake Job= $284.99
Shoes are $13. If drums are replaced they cost $24/pair, three hours time

    5- Programming- ECM/BCM Flash or Reprogramming Charge = $250
This looks like BS. There's a laptop/Techstream/cable for flushing in #1

6- Replace Inverter Coolant Pump, Coolant Sensor, Bleed System - $1,006.82
I'm unfamiliar with this repair. The pump is $66. I guess $20 for the sensor. I guess four or five hours..

For the next big repair in your future - The big battery in back had some issues and I replaced one of the 28 modules and spent a month rebalancing the survivors - at a cost of about $400. I have a second also-a-beater car so the month of downtime wasn't an issue. These days it appears that new batteries go for about $1600-1700 with a lot of labor.

The "pump" codes were not pump codes, they are for the coolant control valve/thermos system..

I just swapped a inverter cooling water pump today. From the time the car pulled into my driveway until the job was complete was 1 hour and 5 minutes.

This included jabber jawing for a couple minutes, as they were friends of the family, doing a health check with techstream and showing them the P0A93 (inverter cooling system performance), discussing most likely issues, replacing it by removing the driver headlight etc, etc.

The dealer charges around $550 for that job. (but they usually do a complete drain and fill of the coolant, so that obviously explains the cost......)

Where are you finding a set of front brake pads for $10? The cheapest at RockAuto are $36.

Im willing to bet not everything is bad. We havent even heard what caued you to bring in the car? Was it not braking properly? Does the cooling pump seem to be making any weird noises? are your getting the triangle of death?

Most cars will throw multi codes from one issue.

The car has been making a clicking sound when it's off. All of the codes are on, but not the Triangle of Death. Several times when I would turn the car on, it would slightly roll, because the brakes would not engage. This freaked me out
cause I had to pump the brakes. Otherwise, the brakes work.
