I bought the fram filter for the 3rd gen prius and it comes with what they call an o-ring. I think that's what people have been calling a gasket. When I removed the filter right now, there was no other gasket already in the filter. I was just going to put the filter back in without the o-ring because I really don't know where to put it.

Do I need it? And if so, where do I put it?

The o-ring replaces same on the plastic piece that holds the filter. It should be changed each filter change.

The o-ring almost looks like it belongs on the filter housing. It really does come off though. Good luck.

thanks guys. i was looking at the picture before, but i thought it was inside the housing with the filter. got it now. thanks!

also is the toyota filter superior to the fram filter? i think i got it for like 7-8 bucks at kragen while i was getting the oil, so i just asked them for a 3rd gen prius filter. thought it would work fine.

I can't comment on quality, but I got a case of 10 OEM filters for $46. Although, now that the oil change interval is 1 year, I'm regretting buying the case.

From various sites on the internet, it would appear that using clean toilet paper is superior to fram filters. I don't think they are that bad, but google fram oil filters and make up your own mind.

Personally, I think they were really bad a few years ago but seem to have worked to improve.

I don't know if anyone could offer you anything but anecdotal opinions about them. Who has the facilities to test oil filters? I don't think that I will use enough of them during the life of my car to justify using anything but a top notch filter. I have to assume that if I were to use Toyota brand filters, they could hardly complain about that.

They didn't earn the title Orange can of Death for not trying.

I always tell people when it comes to filters buy the best. You can get cheap in other ways but don't scrimp on filters or fluids.

Lets face how much are you really saving by using cheap filters and oil over 10K OCI.

I just got my oil changed at the dealer, the cartridge was $4.50, the gasket was .80, Toyota 0W20 oil was $5.50 a quart, and 2 clips $2.08 ea. Gee your really saving a whole lot of money buying a Fram unit at AAP or Walmart.

You got quite the deal on the oil. The filters when I picked up 3 last month, were originally around $8 each. They were on sale if you got 3 for around $5.50 or so each. They gave me a free gasket for the drain plug with each filter. I asked about the oil, and I believe it was $6.75/qt as they quoted. I already had my OW20 Amsoil at home that I will be using in the Prius (and also Harley). Needless to say, I will have annual oil changes, mostly to change the filters. If Amsoil had a 25k filter, I'd probably push the 2 year mark given the amount of miles I drive. Either way, $70 or so per OC isn't bad considering I'm using the Amsoil, fully synthetic. I also send off for the analysis to make sure that nothing seems out of whack.

OK ... The last post on this thread was in ... 2010. It's a good thread still and I'm gonna post an opinion.

All different types of guys with opinions all over the internet have their favorite brands and the brands they like to hate. FRAM is an old company with a long history. In the '70's I remember selling more Fram oil filters than any other brand. When a customer asked ... they got a Fram. We had AC-Delco and FoMoCo too but those only went if customers specifically asked. Nobody ever complained about Fram oil filters. Now today it seams that every critic and/or guy that wants to make a vid claims and shows how crummy Fram oil filters are. You know what ... they're still in business selling lots of filters. I can't remember any stories of cars blowing-up because of Fram oil filters. Maybe I just missed all of them. NO ... I can't remember the last time I used a Fram oil filter on my car. It would have been in the '70's. That doesn't mean they suck. I think that anyone that does oil changes REGULARLY ON SPEC can do just fine getting the most economical products available. I think I've seen some videos on that topic too. Anyway ... that's my point.
