but Android Auto is not offered in any Prius Prime, as far as I can tell. I'm confused.

In that post, I understand he was talking about Entune 3.0 in general and not specifically about the Prime. Certain 2020 Toyotas will have AndroidAuto.

I understand about all of the media apps being ripped out of Entune and moved into the Apple or Android infrastructure. Good riddance. But what about the completely unrelated Advanced Apps that were for some reason bundled under the "Entune" label, which is the telematics functionality such as Vehicle Location, Remote A/C, Charge Management, etc? Is that just gone in 2020? Is the Safety Connect functionality, which provides emergency service (like GM's OnStar) also gone?

All gone now in the ‘20s. The only way to use remote a/c is with the key fob, and you need to be near the vehicle for it to work. Safety Connect is still built in, though.

The lack of the Advanced Apps is a deal killer for me, plain and simple. I couldn't care less about the media stuff. I use the various Advanced Apps (vehicle location, charge management, remote climate control) all the time.

The 2018 Prime Advanced is beginning to look like the high point of the Prime offering from Toyota. The lack of CarPlay until very recently, without the retrofit CarPlay option is a bit of a clue. To be marketed as a top of the line car, and obviously not incorporated technology in lesser models - another clue. And removing very useful 2018 Prime Advanced features from current model - another clue. The very old display ability and other market dated features, such as display resolution from the 1980s - another clue.

For whatever reason, Toyota created an orphan car before it was born. Very odd and appears to make no business sense.

perhaps Entune was not good in some respects and great in others... they took good copyright stuff with them when they left?

The Media Apps and the Advanced Apps were both bundled under the "Entune" label, but really had nothing to do with each other, functionally or technology-wise. The Media Apps connect to the user's smartphone over Bluetooth (or USB cable) and use the phone Internet service, and display stuff on the in-car screen/speaker. The Advanced Apps use the Safety Connect cell phone in the car, and the app on the phone contacts it via a server, which does the actual data connection to the car. There is no in-car user interface for the Advanced Apps; they are intended to be use when one is away from the car, out of Bluetooth range.

The Safety Connect cell phone in pre-2020 models is for telematics only; that is, low speed, small amounts of data related to the operation of the car or emergency response. I think that the cell phone on the 2020 model with Entune 3.0 is intended for use by the media apps, at 4G speeds.

That's only on vehicles equipped with AndroidAuto. So far, that's the yet-to-be-released 2020 Tacoma, 2020 Tundra and soon-to-be-released 2020 Camry and Avalon.

Just bought 2019 Prius Prime Advanced (Plug In) looking to find out if there is anyway to add Apple Carplay to this car. Either through adding some hardware or software upgrade
Can my version of Entune be upgraded to 3.0. which I understand is Apple CarPlay compatible
