Do dealers usually offer extra incentives as it gets further into the model year ?

My wife and I was originally planning on buying a new 2020 Toyota Prius Prime XLE (color: Blue Magnetism) around December 2019 or January 2020, but now need to wait till at least till May 2020 as we then will be in a position to pay well over 2/3 outright and have only a little left to finance.

That is why I am wondering if by then some dealers might usually be offering incentives to move more of them off their lot before the 2021 model is ready to come out.

I know there still is the $4,500 federal tax incentive, but I am talking about dealer incentives.

Thanks in advance for any replies !

……..added thought, I just remembered that we'd prefer to avoid haggling with a dealership, but go thru a car buying service, so not sure if those incentives would still figure in anyhow.

    Can’t predict the future

Incentives are usually regional and demand based.

Usually incentives increase on the current model year the further you go past June
With them maxing out at the end of the current model year into the subsequent

But in many areas the cars are mostly sold out by the time of the decent clearance September and later

Thanks, it could be later in May or in June when we are ready to buy, but definitely before September 2020.

you would probably do much better in the northeast, unless you insist on buying locally. but yes, incentives will likely get stronger, unless gas spikes and creates demand

Understood, I guess if there is a big enough difference in price to make it worthwhile we could always consider buying from elsewhere and having it shipped.

Not sure if colder winters in the northeast (batteries less efficient in the cold) causes less sales there to where that region needs to offer better deals, just a thought.

no, it's because of the carb states. toyota gets cali credits for every prime sold here, so they overstock the dealers, and up the discounts and rebates when they need more carb credits

I‘d be surprised if anyone, even top executives at Toyota, knows today.

Many of the new vehicles that will be in dealers’ inventory next year have not yet been made. Indeed, Toyota’s fleet website says they’ll be taking orders for MY 2020 Prius Prime cars through May 11, 2020, for September 2020 delivery. This could change, of course.

Keep in mind, also, that Southeast Toyota Distributors, which supplies Toyota cars and trucks to dealers in South Carolina and four other states, doesn’t seem to sell many Prius Prime cars, and the model isn’t even mentioned on the regional website. Dealers have them in stock, but not in large quantities, compared to the liftback Prius, so if current trends continue, there may not be much inventory to clear.

Thanks for the info, I have seen a few Prius Prime cars available within about 30 miles of where I live but not a lot of them, I'll have to see what is available in my area in May/June of 2020 when we are ready to buy, perhaps we might have to travel a little farther to get the specific model and color we want, but I hope to be able to stay within about 50 miles if possible, but preferably closer.

according to a member here, john1701, there will be a much larger rollout of 2020 primes across the nation than in previous years.
hopefully, once manufacturing is up to speed, we'll start to see the results

Great !!!! Thanks for letting me know that.

As much as I'd like to buy right now, having to wait till at least May 2020 could work to my advantage both in easier availability and in getting a better deal.

Around May 2018 Toyota offered up to $4500 cash rebate for 2017 model in some states on the east coast, and Around Feb 2019 Toyota offered $5000 cash rebate for 2018 model again. They normally started the cash rebate few months back with $2000 rebate and gradually increase, depends on the how fast the inventory goes. Looks like now the 2019 model is already at a very low level so probably next year most 2019 model will be gone, and I'm not sure if they will try to push the 2020 model by then.

Thanks for the info, I can hope there might be extra incentives on the 2020 by May of next year, but if not at least there still should be the $4,500 federal tax incentive available. (of course I'll be shopping for the lowest price even without extra incentives)

Sounds great, only thing with us is we'll be looking to get a 2020 in the year 2020 so not sure if such rebates might be available that soon.

If that is direct from Toyota it might be limited to certain areas because I just checked the Toyota web site and it only lists the federal $4500 tax incentive. You have to put in your zip code to see incentives and rebates available in your area.
