TPMS sensor ID from another Toyota you own

My TPMS light was flashing and Techstream live data showed that I no longer get pressure signal from one sensor. I am planning to replace the defective sensor which is already 13 years old when I change tires next year. The other 3 are still working fine but I would probably replace all 4 of them.

However, the flashing TPMS light annoys me since I have no other issue with the car. Here is a shortcut until I change tires and replace the sensors. This way I would get reading from just 3 tires on my Prius and one dummy reading from another Toyota I own.

On the other Toyota I own I used techstream, went to the TPMS module, then live data, and read the 4 TPMS ID numbers. Then I went to my 2006 Prius and did the same. Finally, using the ID registration utility on my Prius, I recorded one ID from my other Toyota and the 3 working IDs from my 2006 Prius. Since both cars are parked close to each other daily the flashing light turned off and my 2006 Prius is tricked that all 4 TPMS sensors show pressures. A temporary fix if you own another toyota and park close.

Not sure how well that will work. Maybe, since it's second gen, the tech is a little different. My 3rd gen) scenario:

When I've got the winter tires (without sensors), the all-season wheels (with sensors) are stacked in the garage, just feet from the car. Every time the car's driven into the garage it reacquires signal, but when the car's driven the light comes back on in short order.

It's a little light, I just tough it out, lol.

Post it note, cut to cover the annoying light. If needed black electrical tape over it. The post it note doesn't leave behind sticky residue like electrical tape or such. Can be peeled off easily. Love post it notes.

What happens when you drive away from the other car?

So far no light comes on. I use the car all day at work and for some reason the car does not shows the TPMS light while searching for the tire sensor from the other Toyota. I will park away for a couple of nights to see if this triggers it.

The TPMS light was off for a year now. Last week I sold the other Toyota where I was borrowing signal for one of the sensors and the TPMS light came on again on my 2006 Prius.

No more shortcut. I ordered a new DENSO sensor for $30, I will register it with Techstream and give it to the tire shop to install. I hope the TPMS light issue will be solved permanently ( or until another sensor battery fails).

That is very strange. Usually, my Prius Prime with no TPMS in winter tires would not lit up the TPMS light when I park my car at home. The set of summer tires with TPMS sensors registered are sitting in the garage and the car thinks they are on the car. However, after driving away from home thus away from the set of summer tires with registered sensors, the light will turn on. This usually takes about 20 min. I would think one sensor would do the same thing, but in your case, it didn't. Don't know why?

Maybe his commutes and trip segments in that Prius were all under 20 minutes each?

That's possible. But even if the commute is, say less than 10min, the car being turned off away from home and starting again later will turn on the TPMS light immediately, I would think. So, yeah, maybe on the way to work is OK, but coming home, it should trigger the warning. Maybe Gen2 TPMS is sufficiently different from newer Prius. I don't know.

I am not sure why the tpms light was not coming on even after 20 min or many hours. Maybe it has to do with the algorithm the system is using. Remember it was reading a value when the car was starting next to the other toyota, then the system is probably waiting for a low pressure signal to turn the light on but this reading never comes.

Now that I do not have the other Toyota to borrow TPMS signal from the system does not initialize, the light flashes first and then stays on to show system malfunction.

But in your case, even after you shut off the car, and later you start car again at location away from your home, like at work, the TPMS light did not come on. That is bizarre.

But that is how I had understood or thought it worked. When the ignition was shut off, if the no-detection timer had not yet tripped, it was reset back to zero, to start fresh next time. But once that timer runs out just once, and flashes the warning, then it is game over until the problem is fixed. The warning is flashed immediately at each subsequent restart.

Maybe some other readers here have more experience with it ...

Oh, I see. In his case, the TPMS light never came on even after 20 min has passed. But that means his car was in perpetual timer reset, then it does not explain the fact that he now sees TPMS light on after his other Toyota vehicle is gone. What is the difference between parking at his work away from his house with no TPMS signal and parking at his house without his other Toyota car?

Here is another interesting thing I noticed. I received in the mail my new DENSO tire sensor and I used the TPMS utility on Techstream to register it on my Prius. I have an appointment next week to install it on the front right wheel so now the sensor is in the glove box. The TPMS light is off!

I can read tire pressures using Techstream from the other 3 sensors (37.6, 37.4, 35.2) and obviously no reading from the new sensor (it just shows a dash -) that is not installed yet. Does anyone has any idea why the TPMS light now remains off?

No. But it is strange indeed.

How long have you waited since the install? Or have you started the car up and gotten it to ready?

Sometimes it takes a bit to take once the sensor is there.

I have a ScanGauge II and in the morning it takes 2 minutes or so to "relearn" what the pressures are once I have the Prime in "ready".

Does the sensor require some sort of activation in order to start transmitting?

E.g. as a feature to prevent battery drain before consumer use, some devices that come with preloaded batteries have an insulating tab on a battery terminal that must be pulled out. A replacement smoke detector I installed last month didn't start until its first twist into its mounting plate.

Could it be that this sensor doesn't start until first pressurization, or getting shoved into a wheel rim, or something similar to serve as an activation?

Yes the instructions say the sensor is activated when the pressure drops for 3 seconds. If will be activated when it is installed on the wheel. However, I am surprised that the TPMS light is off without any reading from the new sensor yet. I just registered the number of the sensor at this point and will install it next week.

Since registering the sensor, have you run the car for at least 10-20-ish minutes in a single continuous session? It takes a while before the TPMS alerts on a missing sensor.
