    Not according to CarAdvice which did back to back testing across the same route:
    "urban ... the Prius used 4.1L/100km, where the Corolla Hybrid used 4.4L/100km ... highway ... Corolla Hybrid use 4.9 litres per 100km, where the Prius used 4.4L/100km ... ".

    "... the CO2 emissions of the Prius will inevitably be lower (the claim is 80g/km for the Prius on the combined cycle test and 96g/km for the Corolla Hybrid)"

    Those numbers don't add up. Does Australia have European standards of measuring? Maybe Prius was tested under NEDC and Corolla is tested under WLTP?

    European numbers:
    Corolla sedan has 76-83 g CO2/km
    Prius 75-84 g CO2/km

    The road test results were real world, by motoring journalists.

    I just checked with another local journal (CarsGuide) "...the Prius’ ... result is a real-world fuel figure which is difficult to argue with. Over my test week I scored 4.1L/100km ...".

    Same journal "... Corolla Hybrid [HATCH] ... over roughly 300km of city, suburban and freeway running we recorded 5.6L/100km, which is a pretty handy ‘real world’ result." These weren't back to back like the first one I quoted.

    I suspect the difference is - PRIUS was designed with low l/100km in mind from the ground up. Corolla Hybrid is the Corolla with the Hybrid drivetrain added.

    Well..for US maybe. However, I still see lots of sedans around here...and VERY few hatchbacks...so I think we may me in the minority here. (y) Which is exactly why Toyota did what they did...they aren't stupid. Much research goes into deciding which vehicles to release where. Hence the release of the hybrid RAV4 in the USA instead of a corolla hatch...which is a runaway hit.

    Is the drivetrain different in Australia? Something doesn't make sense here. In the US, the drivetrain is exactly the same as the Prius ( in fact, the hybrid corolla is essentially a re-skinned Prius ), and the MPG numbers are nearly the same. From what I've read, the MPG numbers can be a bit conservative too...just like for the Prius. Something is not adding up at all...

    BTW - doing a random search resulted in :

    The 2020 Corolla Hybrid Sedan Is Slow yet Highly Efficient

    "Even more impressive is the 56 mpg the Corolla returned on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, which works out to a highway range in excess of 700 miles."

    That is saying something...especially since Car & Driver did the test. They are not known for handling their test cars 'gently'. (y)

    It's a sedan in a crossover market that lists for $3000 more than the ICE version. My hopes are low.

    Start/stop systems are known as micro hybrids in some corners, and all the F150s have such a system. The V6 in the Ram 1500 has a mild hybrid system standard. Every new car in China will have to at least be a mild hybrid. Hybrids are now seeing a big push in Europe, and has surpassed the US as number 2 market for them.

    Cars have long lives, so non-hybrid ones will be around for a awhile, but new cars without any degree of hybridization will likely become more common sooner than expected.

    That's a 3.2% to 3.4% difference. I see about that much change when switching between winter and summer blend gasoline. Aggressive driving could cause that much change. Be cool to see what happens if we got those drivers to switch models.

    That is possible. Australia switched to WLTP for 2017.

    i give toyota a lot of credit for extending the hybrid platform, but i agree, a cuv would probably be more popular.

    aren't corolla sales declining for the first time ever?

    2017 = 330k

    2018 = 300k

    still, 300k is a lot of cars.

    i suppose we have to wait for gas prices to rise, like prius

    Keep in mind that @alanclarkeau is reporting the Prius vs. Corolla Hatchback which may explain why the journalists had worse mileage, especially on the highway. In North America, the Corolla Hybrid is only available as a sedan, a much longer car than the hatchback. Here, the journalists have been able to hit 4.7L/100km (50mpg) in the Corolla (but I believe they were getting close to 4.5L/100km or 54mpg in the Prius).

    We had two Corollas in our family:

    1997 Corolla DX Plus 1.6 (100hp@5,600rpm, 105lb-ft@4,400rpm) with a 3-speed automatic. "Plus" package added A/C, cruise control, variable intermittent wipers and carpeted floor mats.

    Then we had a 2000 Corolla LE (1.8 litre VVT-i 125hp@5,800rpm, 126lb-ft@4,000rpm) 4-speed automatic.

    That was a good review. I suspect that if you debadged the white model shown in the review, very few people other than those familar with the Toyota line would be able to tell it is a different car than my similar color debadged Prime. White car, funky front end, similar wheels, both have a Toyota badge.

    I backed mine into a parking space a few weeks back, and a guy came up from the front and asked me how I liked my new Camry.

    The Gen 4 (2016+) uses the EPA testing required starting in 2017. That is still the current standard.

    Members outside the US posting numbers from their preferred test are off-topic since the article is based off the US EPA tests.

    Yeah the current Corolla looks much better than previous iterations. It would be nice to be able to get the hybrid in XLE or SE form.

    I was watching traffic from a restaurant the other day and noted that a Civic from the mid-2000s (2006-2011) looked fine and still modern while the Corolla (2009-2013) looks dated.

    The hatchback may help with the back slide.

    Around $3000 seems to be the retail price for Toyota's system. Now, they can hide it, or simply eat it, on models if need be.

    But the US doesn't get the hybrid in hatchback, nor the wagon at all.

    I thought that was considered a problem for Toyota.

    Probably is. With most manufacturers these days, they have a corporate brand look and all the models are similar. The nose of evey late model Audi is the same, Toyota noses look alike, it's hard to tell an Accord from a Civic at a distance, Even most of the CUVs look very similar now. The days of Harley Earl are long gone.

    Off topic but I debadged my Prius v (wagon) and i swear I get treated better when driving it then when I drive the liftback. Of course, it may just be me thinking that...who knows. (y)
