[2019] Your opinion on a fair price for 2014-2015 PiPs

    I have been hanging out in the forums and gathering as much information as I could about things to consider before buying a PiP.


    Read the PiP FAQ, several other posts about people considering buying a 2014-2015 PiP and am grateful for everyone’s contributions and thoughtfulness.


    I would like to elicit your opinion on what would be fair values for these cars (SF Bay Area):


    1. 2015 PiP Base - 74k Miles
    Single/Original owner with pet
    Clean title, no accidents, all service records available
    Private party
    Asking 14.5k+tax

    2. 2014 PiP Base - 62k Miles
    Single/Original owner w/o pet
    Clean title, no accidents, all service records available
    Private
    Asking 14k+tax

    3. 2015 PiP Base - 62k Miles
    Unknown(carfax available)
    Clean title, no accidents, all service records available, HOV sticker never used
    Asking 16.5k+tax
    Used car seller

    4. 2014 PiP Base - 60k Miles
    Single/Original owner
    Clean title, no reported accidents, all service records
    Shift app (guessing no need for additional check by mechanic)
    Asking 15.5k+tax

    I have created a list of things that I will be checking, thanks to this forum and talking to hybrid mechanics.

    Will also be taking the car that we select to a hybrid specialist garage to get a buyer’s inspection done before finalizing deal, preferably near the listing but don’t know any good ones in South Bay (suggestions welcome!)

    This will be our first car, we commute by public transit and bicycle but with a baby entering our world soon all that might change....so looking for a green vehicle that doesn’t break the bank and is reliable

    Good Morning Scube,

    As I am a owner of 2-2013 PIP’s I can tell you I have had no issues with either vehicle since new. 1 has 180k- 135k HV/45k EV. The other has 158k 79k HV -79k EV In my opinion, if I was looking for a used vehicle I would be focusing in on a used Prime. If this is out of your price range then I would look at the 1st gen PIP. I would look for an advanced model to get the most for the money. Depending where the purchase will be made (market value) $13k-$15k would be about where I would hope for. You have many more options than we did in the beginning. I would stay with Toyota. Good luck and Happy hunting.

    i like the first one. just clean the intake grille and cooling fans.

    or maybe make low offers on each and see if anyone bites, they all look good.

    as for price, i use kbb in my zip

    One has to take a step back...

    A Prime brand new from Rhode Island is around $21,000 ish sometimes less considering tax rebates you may get

    With a parity of $5000 ish or less is used worth it?

    I agree with all good replies above.

    If you like the styling of the Gen3 go for it. See if you can get better offers in.

    If you like the Gen4 style, Rmay does have a valid point, in being even a 2019 or 2020 Prime
    It would be 4-5 years newer also.

    Thank you for all your responses.
    We are trying not to go for a new vehicle because of price, we originally had a 10k limit that crept up to 13-14k to have a relatively newer car.

    Will see if anyone is willing to negotiate. I have done a little more looking around on the forum and these are the prices people have paid (maybe handy for someone else looking):

    1. 2014 PiP Base - 88K miles
    One owner
    Paid $10,300 + taxes
    Got SCE rebate of $1000 so effective total price was $10,300
    Purchased July 2019

    2. 2013 PiP Base - 28K Miles
    Paid $14K
    Purchased March 2017

    3. 2015 PiP Base - 74K Miles
    Paid $13.5K
    Purchased March 2019

    Don't know about the title conditions, so that's a factor.

    I had another question, often when I look on KBB and Nada guides, the Nada guide's values are quite a bit lower (-2K) than KBB for PiP.
    I researched and saw that actually Nada guides should have a higher value since it only takes dealer trade-in into consideration whereas KBB looks at all kinds of sales, wondering why KBB values for PiP are higher.

    Am I missing something here?

    trade value-what a dealer should offer is always gonna be lower, so they can sell it for the
    retail price

    and retail price is higher due to the sticker price on lots.

    Private party is lower, and that is where you will find better deals for the most part.

    The dealer can also stiff you for warranty, and service plans.

    edit: oh wait, the private party is higher?

    On this side of US, I get the identical price for nada
    and for kbb i get:

    Hi everyone!

    Just an update, bought a 2014 Prius plug-in with approx. 60K miles on it for $13.2K + tax.
    Got it inspected at a hybrid specialist garage before buying and they found it to be in very good condition.

    Two things that I will have to look in to:
    1. Need to replace Auxiliary battery, they quoted $300 for that
    2. 2 PCM updates, approx $90

    So in conclusion, an average deal, but the seller was super nice and car is in very good condition so I am happy for now.
    Will report update in a month or two.
