You should try asking Toyota for a goodwill warranty first, it might be covered for free

Yes, i agree with JC91006 on that...Note that Camry hybrid has 34 modules

Would that be something I would start at the dealer, the person who gave me the quote was a service manager I had used on another repair. He implied it was out of warranty, and quoted the repair price. Thank you for your quick reply!

If you get a remanufactured one from a reputable source it is unlikely that it would be worse than one that you do yourself.

You wouldn't likely buy equipment that is as good as what a large remanufacturer has.

You also are not likely to be as thorough. The big manufacturers warrant their packs for 3 years. Do you feel confident that replacing one cell would make this failing pack lady for 3 years?

Time, heat, use, non-use, all have impact on how a battery ages. Kind of like people, eh?

Best of luck with the goodwill warranty.

Going by the above recommended settings from MTL_hihy for the Hitech X4-80, I have discharge capacity at 2.0A down to 6V. Charge at 1.0A. Capacity cutoff (User Program settings) at 7500 mAh. NiMH peak at "default". I do three Cycles DCHG>CHG: 3. Safety Time is off. No Temp probe. My garage is about 60 degrees, and I have a fan blowing on the pack.

My three questions about the hitech are: 1) why is Discharge often showing only 1.1A or 1.2A on the display instead of the 2.0A I have set during the Discharge phase?. 2) Why do the results of the three cycles show sometimes the total Charge cycle summary is lower than 7500 mAh? Is something causing it to cut off charging sooner. 3) Sometimes during the Charge cycle (set at 1.0A), I see it drop to 0.0 for five or ten seconds, then go back up to 0.9A, then 1.0A again. Why is the charge stopped for that time?

For question 2 here are some examples:
Example A - using 1.0A Charge up to 7500mAh Cutoff
    dhg1 chg1 dhg2 chg2 dhg3 chg3
    2133 3584 2988 7500 4246 4296 (chg1 and chg3 don't reach 7500)

Example B - using 2.0A Charge up to 7500mAh Cutoff
    dhg1 chg1 dhg2 chg2 dhg3 chg3
    2454 7500 4256 7500 4682 7500 (chg1, 2, and 3 all reach 7500)

In example A, the second charge reached the full 7500mAh. In Example B, all three cycles reached 7500mAh. Why are the 1.0A charge cycles not pumping in as much total juice? Does it sense something has reached the max and shut down to avoid damage?

Your Hitech has a power dissipation limit that comes into play on discharge so that at 8 volts, the maximum discharge current is ~1,2 amps to keep below 10 watts heat generation.
The Hitech can detect the DeltaV rise that occurs when cells reach fully charged and shuts down the charging cycle.
This is a mechanism by which the Hitech looks at the voltage difference between charging and resting. This is to be careful not to overcharge your modules.
    I hope that this helps.

I am new and and I have an old G2, my car's hybrid battery is bad and I am going to replace the bad cell module.
I understand that Hybrid battery needs to recondition/rebalanced in order to work well.
I was very good in Electronic in my school year and fixed so many electronics stuffs.
It is such big job to charge/discharge to recondition/rebalance each module one by one.
I am not sure that it is stupid idea or not or someone tried it already.
1). Can I install temporary househouse power outlet and connect to Hybrid battery 200V DC terminals.?
2). At weekend Using 100W 220V light bulb to discharge whole battery with timer
3). At weekend, Charge it with simple home-build 200V charging in 0.5A with timer

Did you ever fix this issue? Same thing is happening to me using a different 2 channel charger.

Can anyone please explain about pulse charging and blasting with a capacitor? I'd like some more information or somewhere to read about it.... thanks.

This is a great and informative thread, but a top level question comes to mind:

    1. Individual module testing, discharge and recharge is one common option - to determine and perhaps repair a bad component.
    2. Whole battery discharge and recharge is also a common option - to condition the entire battery, assuming no bad components.

Individual gives the option to replace a module(s) to identify the bad and perhaps effect a cheaper repair. Various opinions on if this makes sense, I understand, but a lot of folks seeming to take this option. Whole battery seems to help when there are no bad modules or the "badness" is shallow.

If one were to use individual testing, discharge, recharge to differentiate between good and bad modules, could you cut down the overall conditioning time by treating the good modules in series (d/c cycles) and the bad modules individually with a final balancing of the fully assembled battery?

In other words, could you not do a first pass to identify weak individual modules, treat those few with RC chargers individually, reassemble then treat with a whole battery (Prolong like) system to save time at the cost of several hundred dollars?

I know this is kind of silly from an individual perspective, might as well just get a new Toyota battery at $1650, but if you had a fleet where the tradeoff of time vs. money made more sense, this might not be so silly a question, although I'm not afraid to ask silly questions in order to get a better understanding.

Also a question I know is going to be silly, if you connect all modules in a battery in parallel, since you already have it disassembled, would you gain time by applying RC cycles to the parallel battery or as I assume, such a rig would be significantly underpowered vs. a device like the Prolong use with a battery wired in series?

    It would seem underpowered/slow.

If you want to decrease the time involved, multiply the number of chargers used. You are on to something; fleet operators have done this.

The only "silly" question is the question which is never asked! o_O This is the best place on t'InterNet to learn all you'll ever need to know about the Toyota Prius! Good luck in finding the answer you seek!
