I just had my catalytic converter stolen overnight in Stockton, CA for my Prius 2006. It's completely upsetting since the car even though it has 165k miles it still runs with the original battery. I wanted to see what my options are, the insurance won't cover it because it didn't have "comprehension coverage" so it's all up to my family and me. What would be the cheapest option to get the part? Can i just buy an used one?

I'm sorry about your theft. You're in a bad spot.

Is it a California emilssions car? If so, I believe that nobody has obtained CARB certification for a replacement catalytic converter. OEM replacement is $1600 for non-CARB. I couldn't find a listing for a CARB OEM version. It would definitely cost as much or more.

It is a violation of federal law to sell used catalytic converters. I believe your best option is to install a non-CARB replacement and sell it in another state.

To remain compliant with federal and California laws, you should not be looking for a private party selling the entire exhaust system. You should not be looking on craigsllist looking for people parting out their entire car. You should not go find some shady muffler shop that will weld one back in for you, or bolt on any complete exhaust system that you may find. ;)

(sarcasm -->) If you wait it out, there might be a chance that a non-CARB replacement could be viable. California can't set higher auto emissions standards, Trump says - CNNPolitics - but that whole mess is going to take years of court battles and appeals after every decision.
