How would the side airbags have helped in a head on crash?

Here is the IIHS report: IIHS examines driver assistance features in road, track tests
The test the Tesla's fail wasn't high speed, but at 31mph, with the automatic cruise control turned off. The emergency braking should be working as well as the ACC on as off.

"Out on the road, engineers noted instances in which each vehicle except the Model 3 failed to respond to stopped vehicles ahead." The IIHS ran several tests looking at how effect level 2 autonomous driving systems are. They didn't downgrade the Tesla's ratings from that failure.

I think that crash was discussed here when it happened, but the article did report the driver had his hands off the wheel when it occurred.

I didn't notice that it was the side airbags that the family is suing about in the first link I posted above.

Nevertheless, there are these problems with Tesla:

    1. They continue their false marketing claim that Tesla is the safest car in the world, despite the cease and desist.

    2. The Autopilot is not autonomous driving but it's implied to be, which gets people in serious crashes when the car's computer or sensors get confused.

    3. There are bugs in Tesla's automatic emergency braking. It doesn't work as well as some of the competitors', including Japanese manufacturers' like Toyota's, causing serious crashes in some instances.

I doubt anyone really cares .... but I'll write it anyway.

I am nearing the point of needing to replace an outstanding 2015 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. Magnificent car.
I'd like to replace it with an EV .... but would consider a plug-in.
All GM vehicles are off my short-list.
I have total confidence in Toyota .... except I can't stand the looks of the Prius; and while liking the Prime ..... I can't live with 25 mile range. (that is insufficient to drive to the Toyota dealer and back home)

I love the looks and technology of the Tesla 3, but there are too many assembly defects, and the Service Centers have gone from good to bad. Insurance cost are sky high as well .... I refuse to be gouged by the insurance cost.

I have watched and read many articles about the Hyundai Kono-EV, but have not actually seen one. Looks interesting.
VW has just brought out the ID.3 - looks interesting. Both are about the right cost, size and I love the reported range. And both look reasonably attrctive (IMHO)

The problem is ... there is so much mis-information. YouTube is crowded with all manner of reviews, pictures and driver impressions ... and there are discrepancies among the reports. Obviously, it will require a personal visit ...... and there is still time to accomplish that.

Meanwhile, I'll keep reading all of your reports and observations. With a few exceptions, I value your opinions more than so many automotive "experts" that seem to have an agenda to patronize.

I tend to "believe" the reviews by Motorweek and Consumer Reports, followed by Edmunds.

why is getting to the toyota dealer and back in ev more important than you average driving range and expected ev/hv ratio?

What is wrong with Chevrolet? They are the cheapest cars to own and maintain along with Toyota. Korean cars are more expensive to maintain and depreciate fast, and they have below-average reliability. They also have some of the highest fatality rates if you look at the statistics report on IIHS.

This is basically you're list of options currently available in the US:
EV Models Currently Available in the US – EVAdoption

Although its far more than even a few years ago, its also not a long list. You're going to have to compromise on something.

If I were in your shoes, I'd pick a few "absolutely must have features", sort that list to pick the three closest matches and go test drive them. Even if we're better than the "experts", we also have different priorities and would likely make different choices than you.

The only one who can answer "what is the best car for me?" is you.

Hi bisco .... mention of the drive to and from the dealer was used only to explain that in the west .... distances are long. 25 miles is not worth even considering. Elsewhere I have said ... if I could get a Prius that looks like a Prime ... that would be my choice.

Gokhan - by bias towards GM goes back to the 50's .... I was a Ford man, and disliked Chevy's ... although I readily admit the 1957 Chevy Belair turned out to be a classic.
GM has a long history of failures .... Corvair, Vega, Cruse (my son spent a fortune keeping that thing running) to name three.
My daughter had a Pontiac ..... it was nothing but expensive problems.

Then GM developed the EV only to recall every one and destroy them
Then they cancelled the Oldsmobile, Saturn and Pontiac ..... each seemed to have a viable place in the market. I rather liked the Firebird .... and I really like the 2 seater Pontiac and Saturn roadster.

I know that none of the above are good reasons ... but us old folks get an idea in our head and it is hard to dislodge.

I've never owned a Hyundai ... my neighbor has an SUV and loves it.
    I've owned 3 VW .... 2 were great, one a disaster.

I love Toyota's build quality, reliability, trouble-free ownership. But the Prius design is a total turn-off (each to their own)
I like the Prime .... but I really "pull up short" of buying one ..... 25 miles short.
