Good evening. Newbie from San Diego here. Looking at buying a 14 V with 129k miles on it for my 100 mile a day commute. Are these reliable at this mileage and anything I need to be aware of? Seems like reading through here in the past couple hours head gaskets are an issue?

Welcome to PriusChat! I hope you enjoy whatever Prius you choose as much as I do mine.

Mine has been reliable, a CA Prius V will have a 150,000 Hybrid Warranty but the engine is out of warranty.

The 1.8 l engine has had issues with clogging in the EGR system that results in head gasket failure. Cleaning the EGR system may be wise if you get the v. Then every 120,000 miles.

Other than that, I have found it to be reliable, I have 125.300 on mine.

The v has much more cargo room, but gets about 10 MPG less than the liftback.

I'd suggest you spend a little more money and get one with lower miles. 100 miles commute can really add up fast. These are only reliable up to about 200k miles, assuming you don't get the dreaded head gasket issue early

Thank you both for the info. This has been a bit of a whirlwind for me trying to learn quickly about the Prius as I have not historically researched the model. I know they are reliable but the car is 11k and a bit more than I want to spend. So I'm thinking a may pass on this particular one.

    welcome!
good idea, and do some calculations on vehicle prices vs gas savings to see if a hybrid will be worth the trouble.

    all the best!(y)

Have you figured out your brake problem.... I have the dreaded pump running every 15 seconds and if I hold the pedal down it goes to the floor and the skid light comes on... let off and light goes of and breaks work....
