GPS-Nav system and Roof racks

    Hey. Just bought an '06 Prius and was disconcerted to read in the manual that installing a roof rack may hurt the nav system's performance. Anybody have any information on this?

    seems unlikely since the NAV GPS is in the Dash forward the driver's possition.

    I have a 2005 & have had a roof rack on it for almost a year now. It is a Yakima & I carry 2 bikes on it. I have not had nav system performance issues. And I do use nav a lot when I have the bikes on top. :)

    No worries... i've got an '06 and have hauled my Kayak on top with Saris racks all summer. No hit in nav performance anywhere (used it in cleveland, Minneapolis, and the 13 hour route between the two :-p)

    Great to hear, thanks. That leads to "the" follow up question, of course, which I'm gonna ask the other owner, too: how much of a hit did your MPG take? We're starting with bikes, but hope to pick up a kayak in the next few years....

    It varies based on the type of driving i'm doing. for the couple of miles from my place to the lake i don't even really notice it. for highway conditions, it can drop down into the high 30's (don't let my lifetime average fool you... half of that is the big move from ohio to minnesota, which came in at a shocking 33 MPG between the kayak, being full to the roof with crap, speeding, and a heavy wind), although well worth it, if you ask me (especially considering my last car got 20MPG without anything on the roof...)

    the last big trip i took with the kayak averaged 43 MPG (4th of july weekend), and my current 3-tank moving average is 48MPG.
