I used this app (i’m sure someone already mentioned this app) in conjunction with my bluetooth OBDII adapter. Was done in 2 mins and didn’t cost anything since I already had the adapter.

It's because of the design of the electronic shift level does not mechanically latch in the reverse position to indicate that the vehicle is in reverse.

When Consumer Reports reviewed the Prime, the lack of a positive mechanical shifter was one of their major complaints. Because the shift lever always returns to its central position regardless of what "gear" the Prime is in, it's possible to think you've shifted into "D" when you've inadvertently shifted into "R."

Yes, I know there is a big illuminated display on the MID, but the assumption is that people are more familiar with knowing what gear they're in by the physical position of the shift lever.

Jason Torchinsky wrote in his review published in Jalopnik:

    The Beeping

The Prius Prime, like the rest of the Prius line, beeps the entire time you’re in reverse because the goofy design of the Prius shifter gives no indication what gear you’re in on the shifter itself. The dash, sure. The huge center screen showing the backup camera is also a clue. But Toyota doesn’t think his is enough, hence the beeping.

If – no – when I run Toyota one day, I’ll stick a tiny OLED display in the shift knob that shows what gear you’re in, and end the internal, infernal beeping forever.

Personally, I do not find the beeping annoying. But I can understand how some people might.

I don’t find it annoying as much as distracting from all the other beeping the Prius does as a warning.

Personally, I find a manual shifter much more annoying. Having to put the shifter in Park before I turn off the Rav4 Hybrid always ticks me off. I'm so used to pressing the P button for park and just pushing the Start button to shut down after three joystick Prii. It's just different from what people are used to, so they focus on it and complain before they have enough time with it to appreciate the elegance of the design.

I find the complaint no physical indication of gear totally bogus. The only way to tell what gear you're in with a steering column shift automatic is an often inaccurate visual indicator. "Hey Consumer Reports! When was the last time you tested a light duty truck?". Manuals gearshifts often return to zero after shifting or provide little visual indication of what gear you are in.
