I've noticed several Prime owners comment that using the Qi wireless causes their phones to heat (even overheat). If so: (1) what causes this phenomenon, (2) can't be good for your phone, can it, and (3) is this heating phenomenon consistent with other car Qi systems?

My old S6 got hot from the wireless charging. The new phone not only doesn't, it also charges a lot faster.

How hot is hot? How much hotter than when charging normally? Are these phone being reported as hot wireless charging ready or wireless charging equipped or using third party adapters?

If I use my phone all day in the car on hot summer days the temp of the phone to the touch is much hotter than it will be on a cooler day in the fall. If I'm running my phone watching high resolution video for several hours the battery gets hot. If I'm watching high resolution video for a couple hours and wireless charging at the same time, well you do the mafhs....
So if one knows the phones limits, it's less likely to hear complaints about how the thing behaves, especially if it's being pushed beyond it normal limits.

I’ve seen my iPhone XS Max warm up both on its home wireless charger as well as on the P.Prime’s but somewhat more so in the car than in the house. That’s kinda ironic since the home charger is considerably more powerful.

Nevertheless, I use inductive more often, to reduce wear on the charging connector, but the heat is an issue too. Perhaps ideal would be to switch off roughly every day: wireless one evening, then wired, then wireless...

Anyway, I‘m guessing the difference is that the P.Prime’s charger itself produces not insignificant heat.

Inductive charging is considerably less efficient than contact charging, unless you can get the device being charged super-close. That’s part of why it’s not realistic for charging large batteries like those in a (PH)EV. The efficiency goes up the closer you can get the charger to the charging pad on the device. Perfect alignment, and a super-tiny air gap is really hard to accomplish though, especially on a car.

When I first got the car my old Qi Charging capable Nexus did not heat up much, but the charging was too slow to be usable. Since then I have changed my phone to Qi incompatible Pixel. I have not charged any other phone on the Prime's Qi charger. I much prefer 45W USB-c charger on cigarette lighter plug for it's speed. I thought in general the faster the charging, more heat generated, but I maybe wrong on this.

Sometimes Qi chargers create more heat when the phone isn't placed in the most ideal place on the pad.

Does any by any chance know that the sound is when you turn the pad on? In my Corolla you hear a slight noise and you can feel a slight vibration when you press the power button of the Qi charging pad.

I haven’t noticed any sound or vibration when using it in my ‘20 Limited.
