Today as I was going down the highway at 50 MPH in my 2006 Silver Prius I was hit head on by a man in a Ford F250 who had had a diabetic thing and lost control. When he hit me my 14 Year old son was in hte front and 9 Year old in the back. The front Airbags instantly went off for both sides and we flipped over on our side and rolled over and the side curtain airbags went off which I think save my 9 year old's life because she was sitting very close to the door. I called 911 and the police came and they were very shocked that we were able to climb out of out Prius because it is so small and we got hit by an F250. The door's opened easily and the police arrived in 2 minutes and helped my son and daughter out of the car. The bad thing is is that they totaled it basicaly on the scene because the whole front of the car was not there anymore and the engine dropped out. My Allstate insureance wrote me a check for what I paid for it since it was only 1 Month old. The good news is that a Toyota dealer about 45 Minutes away from me has the same color Prius brand new that just came in with the same package 1 as mine did with the side curtain airbags which save our lives and they are moving it to the dealer about 5 Minutes away from my house and I am going to pick it up Thursday. the sad part is that I will have a rental Impala which is nothing close to my prius.

So sorry to hear about your accident and am glad that you and your family are ok. Good news that you were able to find a new Prius already. I don't like to hear about other's accidents, but good to know that I can feel safe driving in my Prius if your's could take such a hard hit with no major injuries to the driver and passengers.

Whoah.....so sorry to hear this!! Glad everyone is all right, though.

That car replacement part of insurance is great! We just took it through Allstate for the Prius...

    Be well. Be safe!

oh my goodness... i'm glad you and the kids are okay! and that you're getting another prius just like the one you have to replace the one that got smashed up. you'll get lots of advice from people experienced in accidents on the site for how to handle the details.

the engine is designed to drop out in a severe head on crash, more crumple room for passenger safety and one less thing that can get pushed into the passenger compartment.

best wishes to you in getting everything sorted out.

Wow... I'm so glad you and your family are all right. And thank goodness for the airbags... it must have been terrifying.

Very cool that you'll be able to replace it so fast... and with the same color even! And just think of how happy you'll be when you turn that Impala back in. ;)

:) WOW... I think Locust43 made a great case for the Prius and especially the side airbags.

My 2004 does not have the side airbags but I am negotiating for a new 2006, or may just await getting a new 2007 (which, I believe has the side airbags in the basic specifications). Meanwhile, I must avoid SUVs and big pickups if at all possible.

Locust43, so good to hear you and your family safely endured such an accident.

Yikes. I hope the other guy is okay too. Having a seizure while driving is obviously no picnic.

Third post... I hate to sound skeptical, but nowadays people make up all sort of stories. I suggest you include photographs of the car after the accident, perhaps some of the ones taken for insurance purposes, just to convince skeptics like me that it's all true. B)

Glad to hear you and your family are all OK. Also glad to hear that the car did what it was supposed to do - much rather sacrifice the car in a situation like that to ensure everyone comes out alright.

Glad that there were no casualties from your family side :D - I hope that your lawyer ( I assume you have retained one) will drain every bit out of that miserable slob that knowingly (diabetic) endangered people with a deadly weapon (F250) .

uh when someone almost dies in an accident along with their daughter, I don't think its in real good taste to post something like this.

why they HELL would they lie about something like that? to brag about how safe the Prius is???

    use your head man!

Man, I'm glaf your kids and you are ok. It's pretty impressive that you all walked away from a severe crash with a Ford Truck. Speaks volume of the engineering. The prius took all the hits and protected the occupants. Speaks volumes of our little car. To me the prius seems like a pretty safe car and I'm glad I went for all the airbags!

Wow, after a crash like that I'm very happy to hear that all the occupants in the Prius are unharmed and doing A-ok!! Sorry you lost your car, but kudos to the insurance co. for getting on the ball and writing you a check for the car's full replacement value. And double kudos to the Toyota dealers for being so accomodating in order for you to have a new Prius (exactly the same as the totalled one!!) tomorrow!!!

I'm just a bit confused in that I thought Package 1 didn't come with side airbags? Am I wrong on this?

Just looked it up. Looks like it does have the side curtain. Nevermind me.....

I was going to say the same thing. I thought Package 1 had no side curtain. Maybe that changed recently.
