There doesn't appear to be any hardware changes in the media system between 2019 and 2020 so it's probaby a software change only. Other manufacturers have retroactively added carplay and android auto via software updates either via OTA or dealer updated.

Is there any chance the last of the 2019s had Carplay? How would you find out? Both the 2019 and 2020 manuals mention nothing about carplay. The keyword doesn't appear in either manual.

The last of the 2019s did not have Carplay, but the dealer believed it would be possible to upgrade since other models (like Corolla) were able to be upgraded. 2020 is supposed to have CarPlay though. I bought mine at the end of Aug. 2019 and that's what I was told at that time. No guarantees, but it looks promising.

If you check the Toyota website, it says the 2020 has CarPlay on both the 7” and 11.5” head unit. Here’s hoping.

Instructions for updating firmware vis usb stick IF there was an update made available:

    Toyota Downloads

That would be for the firmware itself on the media unit.

The Entune app that runs on the actual media unit gets updated OTA.

What would be really interesting is if a firmware update appeared for the 2020 model if it would prevent you from installing it on the 2019 model.

That is because the Corolla has Entune 3.0. The Prius/Prime did not. The Prius and Prime were the last cars on Entune 2.x.

I had a feeling CarPlay wouldn’t work for our old entune versions. I already took the plunge and upgraded the head unit to a pioneer that has CarPlay. Leaving speakers as stock, the sound already sounds twice as better, considering now I have an equalizer to tweak sound and customize to my liking. The factory head unit has their default sound settings really limiting the sounds potential, so I don’t feel too bad 2020 gets CarPlay.

Did you lose any functionality when you upgraded the head unit? I'm about to buy an LE. Possibly an XLE, but probably the LE. Would rather wait for CarPlay but we need a car...this week.

Sorry to reply back so late. I haven’t looked up this site in a while. All controls were kept but that was due to the headunit being idatalink compatible. Almost all controls should still be kept if your headunit is not idatalink serial compatible.

For the vast majority of smartphone users who do not want to use Apple products, a better question is - when will Toyota get with it and make vehicles compatible with Android Auto?

That’s encouraging. At least we know it’s technically feasible to upgrade the stock 2019 head unit to support Carplay...while a third party head unit would certainly more attractive, this would be a lower cost (or even free depending on when you purchased your vehicle). I wonder if there’s a way to get a hold of the update and do the upgrade ourselves.

Read my November 4, 2019 email below, and then Toyota's November 5, 2019 response.

Response By Email (Daniell T.) (11/05/2019 04:26 PM)

    Dear Mr. xxxx,

Thank you for taking time to contact Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and we appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiry regarding the inclusion of Android Auto® in our vehicles.

While Toyota strives to innovate and look for ways to include new technology in our vehicles, Toyota has not announced an Android Auto® retrofit strategy at this time. We certainly appreciate your inquiry and interest. You can sign up for the latest updates with our RSS Feeds and/or receive email alerts when new information is posted in the Toyota USA Newsroom.

Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

    Sincerely,

    Daniell T.

I purchased my 2019 Prius XLE, VIN: xxxxxxx, September 30, 2019. That the Android Auto application was not factory installed was a major disappointment. What was Toyota thinking?

When will Toyota Motor Sales, USA offer Prius owners upgrades / retrofits to Android Auto that Toyota Australia is already offering for $199 AUS as you can read below? $199 AUS is the equivalent of $137 US dollars at today's exchange rate.

"Toyota Australia has finally rolled out its Apple CarPlay and Android Auto retrofit program, along with announcing the standard fitment of the smartphone mirroring systems across its new-generation model lines.

From November 1, existing owners of the Camry, Corolla, Granvia, HiAce, Prius and RAV4 will be able to upgrade their vehicles' infotainment systems – costing $199 for Camry, Corolla and Prius, while Granvia, HiAce and RAV4 retrofits will be free of charge.

The facelifted C-HR and all-new Corolla sedan will arrive before the end of the year with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, too.

"By offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility in our vehicles, we are continuing to refine our market offerings and provide our customers with the products and services that enhance their lives," said Sean Hanley, vice president for sales and marketing at Toyota Australia.

"The technology will allow our customers to stay informed, entertained and in touch with the wider world from behind the wheel, directly through the vehicles.".

I will really doubt CarPlay will work if you have the old entune systems 2019 and previous. The new infotainment systems will be run by automotive grade Linux (AGL) which is an entire different operating system accommodated by different hardware. I won’t believe Toyota will put out the efforts to try to make our outdated hardware work with a entirely different operating system. But then again, I don’t know if CarPlay is a simple add on on top of our dated system.

Ok so that’s why I was wondering about the 2019 Australian Prius retrofit upgrade to CarPlay. Do those models have upgraded head units?

If that’s the case, I would agree the upgrade isn’t likely coming. In that case I’ll likely look into third party options.
