So they replaced the shock. The creaking is still there. I pointed out the rubber bump stop and the guy said "hey we can't rely on what some randoms on an internet forum said, we need to check it for ourselves". So he made another appointment and I have to go back and give the car overnight again. What a drag.
I'm pretty sure it is this bumper stop but in that other thread, no one posted a solution. The guy only said he found where the noise was coming from.

This video was a pretty informative one if only to have great picture guides on how to replace the filter. It shows you how to modify the filter holder to accommodate a HEPA filter with pleats going the other way.

The OEM part number I listed in my post a few back is the non-carbon filter, and the less expensive of the two. OEM I took out of the car was pure white, and presumably not the carbon.

So the dealership says they need to keep the car for days to evaluate where the creaking is coming from. This is really annoying since I won't have the car. They've confirmed the sound, though they just don't know where it's coming from.

Since it's a warranty issue, has anyone had any luck being compensated with a rental car or something? The guy literally said that the mechanic doesn't know when he'll get time to evaluate it so they just need to keep it until he has time. Like Wth?

According to here it says they should provide a loaner vehicle if it requires "extensive diagnosis". They're keeping it overnight so who's the judge of whether it's extensive or not?

    So update.

I did receive a loaner in the end and they worked on it for 2 days. Service manager called me in to test drive. Creaking gone. However there's still some rocking/rattling noise coming from the back which sounds like it's within the car (battery area).

So he said alright he'll look at it further. So basically things are happening. I hope they get to the bottom of it. It's worrying since it sounds almost like something is loose and settles down after a couple seconds.

    So final update:

Kevin at Toyota Pasadena was very accommodating and promised to get rid of all the noises. They gave me a rental from Enterprise while they worked on figuring it out for about a week. Came back to a car that was pretty quiet.

He explained that the creak was coming from within the rear of the car from a plate of sheet metal that was too close to the frame and was rubbing against it. The other rattling noise was coming from the rubber stopper around the shaft of the rear shock absorber (for when it bottoms out) that was rattling up and down.

So both turned out to be non safety critical things but annoying things nonetheless. Main takeaway is that it was *not* that rubber bumper stop on the rear hatch like in that other thread. Frankly I don't even know if that rubber bumper stop was even confirmed to be the source of any noises in that thread since the guy never came back to update. I strongly suspect that guy had the same noises that I have and s/he just never solved it. Anyhow Kevin (service manager) said that Toyota is writing up a special Field Engineering Report for this stuff because it is likely to be found on other Primes. So there you have it.

That's great! Thanks for not being like "that other guy" and actually coming back to tell us about what happened. I wish everyone would remember to do that. (y)(y)

Did they replace any part? My car after they replace the rear shocks, the noise went away but now I'm hearing noises again BUT my warranty has expired already (33,500 miles+).

Like for your car, the first thing they did for mine is replace the shocks. Did jack squat. At that point I was getting annoyed and escalated it all the way to the top because I knew this was going to take some detective work that was beyond dealership techs. A Toyota field tech had to come out for this one. I don't *think* they replaced anything, rather they increased the spacing between the culprit plate and the body frame and also lubricated the rubber cap for the shock. They said they're going to modify their manufacturing line to reflect this.

Let me see if I can't find a number that identifies the report that all this went into that you can then use to tell your dealership.
