Hello! First time owner of a used 2008 Prius. I’m in the Atlanta area and I’m looking for a knowledgeable mechanic or just someone who knows a lot about Prius repair and could help me out in the future with any repairs. Currently, I’m dealing with the anxiety of hearing the ABS actuator noises when pressing the brakes. I’m assuming I will need one in the (hopefully not too near) future. If I brake extremely lightly and put as little pressure as possible on the brakes I don’t usually hear the noise. There are also currently no indicator lights on.If I could find someone who knows about these issues and how to fix them for as little money as possibly, much of my anxiety would go away. Thanks in advance!

@marlinsmobile is local and @TMR-JWAP is in the vicinity :).

They might be able to help :).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Welcome. There is probably nothing wrong with the actuator. It uses a pump to periodically re-pressurize the system. The Prius makes several little noises that can be disconcerting to people not used to a car like the Prius. To me that brake pump sound when I open the door is a little like a dog that comes running with its leash in its mouth when you head toward the front door.

Learn to use more brakes than you need. That way you won’t be surprised (the bad way) when you learn how the system transitions from regenerative to friction when you are crossing a pavement defect.

So after panicking I actually went back in the service records and saw that it was replaced in 2016 when Toyota was doing it for free. I’m assuming the part could in theory need to be replaced again but I really hope not. The sounds are just nerve wracking. I watched a video where a guy said his needed to be replaced and the sounds were almost identical. My newest panicking moment is when that red triangle came on last night for like 5 seconds then went away. I’m outside of an auto parts store about to get the codes read now.

The only noteworthy code was P0852 so now I’m just confused. Who knows what caused the red triangle.

P0852 (park or neutral switch input circuit high) is part of the hybrid control system. That was the reason the RTOD (the Master Warning Light) came on.....

wow thank you that’s so helpful. I had it checked out and I don’t know what he fixed, but it’s fine now. Thanks again.
