First DIY oil change -- can't undo oil filter housing

For the first year that we had our 2015 Prius we had the servicing done under warranty by the (non-Toyota) dealer from whom we bought it. Now it's 5K miles since the last time they serviced it (total coming up to 35K), and I was planning to change my own oil and filter this time (and install an oil drain valve). The oil drain plug was not easy to remove, and the filter housing has so far resisted all attempts to loosen it: I have a solid steel Toyota-style tool, but I cannot move that thing at all. There is no room to use a long breaker bar, and if I lie on my back and use my foot on the shorter wrench handle the whole thing -- tool and wrench twist off the filter housing. BTW, the "lug" I can see on the filter housing seems somewhat beat up; maybe the other one is as well.

I saw a YouTube video where the guy resorted to a 300 lb.-ft. impact wrench to drive the Toyota-style tool, and even then it took a lot to get that thing moving.

What if I refill it with oil and just leave the filter on for another 5K?

Or what if I refill it with oil and then get an impact wrench? How much of that new oil would I lose by removing the old filter? -- or I suppose I could try to save as much as possible of the oil that drains out.

Don't use an impact wrench. Use a cheater pipe on a 1/2 square drive ratchet. That would allow you to adjust the length of the "lever arm" to the space available.

I did oil changes at 10 k miles, so you’ll be fine if you wait;).

You’ll need to deal with the oil filter though .

Some have converted to the spin in style, like @Rebound and @RightOnTime :).

So there are options if it is too stubborn to move(y).

Check if there’s a metal clip pin that you can pull out from the housing. The pin prevents the filter from unscrewing while driving. The pin may not be in your line of sight depending on your viewing angle, once removed you should be able to turn it.

The clip does not inhibit rotating the cap. I leave it on and instructions (Toyota) say not to remove it. I believe it is there if the threads fail and the cap pushes straight outwards, to prevent catastrophic loss...

Toyota also said they don't know about clogged EGRs leading to blown headgaskets, no need to change lifetime ATF & etc.

It sounds like your tool is not very good, or not good enough.

Skipping on the filter at this point may be your best option, and should be fine until the next change interval.

I'd definitely not use an impact.

Whether you have time to do it now or some time before the next change, the best thing is to get the filter wrench fitting well on the filter housing. Lots of bad examples out there on this. I bought a $7 cast aluminum wrench on eBay and it fit horribly badly. So I spent almost half an hour sanding it so now it fits perfectly. I expect the $30 version would have saved me that 1/2 hour of my life, but maybe not such an ideal fit.

Then with the filter wrench on there, fitting in all the notches properly, etc. a breaker bar should get it. If no, you can try using a floor jack to push up on the breaker bar. That is pretty much guaranteed to do something.

Ok, but in this case we're talking about something lots of us have been doing multiple times a year and noticing that the filter cap spins off just fine without any need to molest the clip, just like Toyota says.

When it's hard to spin off, in my experience it typically seems that the big O ring has just become really stubborn.

I can lube up the new O ring real nice, spin it on to exactly 18 ft lbf, no more, and the next time I go to take it off, it's always hard to get started.

Never as hard as it was the first time after I bought the car though.

Sounds like OP is concerned about going up to 10k miles.

I was doing the same thing. Really oiling up the O ring. But as my changes came on, it got harder and harder to remove the darn thing. Plus, you had to put in in fairly tight or it would leak. After the conversion, its "spin on - spin off". No leaks and no worries.

Toyota, as I did recognized that the Nylon 6-6 35% glass filled plastic housing swelled in several years time. I go tired of hammering on the factory authorized cap wrench and removing it with Vise Grips.

Accordingly, Toyota eventually went back to the spin on filter on later Prius models.

The tool does seem to fit OK, but the wrench obviously applies a twisting force as well as a rotating force. An impact wrench's force would be entirely a rotating force.

My 3/8-in handle is short, and I don't at present have a pipe that will fit over it to give me more leverage. My 1/2-in handle is too long: the end is touching the floor so I can't move it.

No: assuming that the folks at the place I bought the car did change the filter (as they claimed) when they serviced it 6 months and a little less than 5K miles ago, the filter should have done less than 5K miles, so to run it for another 5K miles should be fine.

The guy on YouTube who used the impact wrench said there's a metal one that was used on Lexuses: 15620-31040. That shouldn't swell.

One of the comments on that video reported a case where it took two guys with a 5-ft. breaker bar to loosen one of those filter housings!!!

On my very first newbie oil change, I turned the oil filter the wrong way to tighten it. I hope you are turning it the right direction.

    1) I normally use a small socket extension (3 inch) with 3/8" drive on my oil filter wrench
    2) As for a breaker bar, my filter wrench has large hex outside which allows you put a 1/2" drive deep socket. You can also use a short socket extension for the extra clearance.

Looks exactly like mine. I don't have a socket the right size, so I've used a 3/8" drive ratchet, but it's rather short.
