The challenge with selling your used Prime

    exact same thing happened with pip, but if you look at net purchase price after all rebates discounts and tax credits, i think the depreciation is the same as any car

    of course, the newer it is, the bigger the depreciation hit

    he's just not pricing it realistically, or waiting for the sucker born every minute

    but if you paid too much, (like i did) you learn to live with it :oops:

    I think you have that the other way around, but yeah.....
    PHEV's have a very steep depreciation curve...especially when you buy a Prime which is essentially an up-optioned $24,000 Prius with a modest EV capability allowing them to be driven in HOV lanes. They're going to be much harder to sell in their first few years of life when, as you say, there's a multi-thousand dollar incentive not to buy a used one.
    I'm always amused when somebody raves about how perfect their car is and how much they love it when.....they're selling it. ;)

    No dig on the Primes intended.....because they are nice cars, but they're a niche car.

    If anything it's a perfect example of how worthless the Adv/Ltd upgrades/options are (or, if looked the other way, how overpriced they are).
    The ~$4k price premium is pretty much gone the moment you drove off the lot - and this is in addition to the typical first year depreciation.

    Unlike Plus vs. Premium, btw, where the differences are apparent and clear.

    Not quite sure I follow you. MSRP on the Advanced was probably $33.5K minus $4.5K tax credit minus $2K rebate gets you in the ballpark of the KBB range mentioned in my OP.

    Yeah I don't follow the rant either. I mean you didn't expect the perspective buyer to pay for the rebates and incentives you already pocketed when you first got the car, right? So depreciation really starts from your after rebate\credit amount.

    Come to think about it.. this creates an interesting situation. Sellers in states with very high incentives on top of what was offered federally might be more willing to lower selling price on an used one than those from states with little or no incentives.

    youse guys are lucky. after i bought my $32,000. msrp pip, they dropped the msrp several thousands of dollars. i've been stuck with this anchor ever since:(

    Was there incentive on pip? I got my PRIME Premium $30K msrp for under $20K, and Toyota rebate was only $3150 and no state incentives.

    i was an early adopter, so the only incentive was a $2,500. tax credit and $500. dealer discount.

    later, the msrp dropped, and the incentives went up. lesson learned. fortunately, i love my car, never owned one more than 4 years before.

    2019 model and maybe 2018 model before new model year release had $5000 Toyota rebate mostly in north east states.

    OH damn?!!! No wonder I couldn't find a 2019 anywhere and had to wait for a 2020 and only got 1500 Toyota rebate.

    Some people bought 2017 with a deep discount and sold it to buy 2018 and made money.

    2020's are still in short supply. if that ever changes, so will the rebates. toyota has to sell a certain number in carb states to make up for their truck and suv sins in cali.

    You forgot sales tax and dealer/reg fees. Then adjust the KBB to the actual amount the 2017 limited go for. Then do the same math for Plus/Prem. Review the results.

    must be interesting to have to hit an exact sales goal in each region

    no more, no less, might explain the north East pricing
