I purchased my 2010 Prius a few months ago from a private seller. This weekend I did some work on it that required removing the undercar engine shield. As it turns out, someone had done this in the past and replaced almost every one of the rivets with some crappy ones that needed to be broken to be removed.

Does anyone have any recommendations for replacement rivets? This is likely not the last time I need to take that shield off, so I'd like to use rivets that won't disintegrate when you try to pull them.

    Thanks

Go into toyotapartsdeal.com and get the part number for the fasteners (or google) and translate that part number into Amazon ;).

I bought a bag of 20 for about $10 and they do come in handy:).

Good luck with your Prius (y).

Also, Mendel finds if you wash them (kitchen sink with soap and water) before re-installing them they last much longer. I tried this and it works well. There are two sizes, as I recall.

The attached pdf lists the plastic fastener part numbers. There's three types. The majority are part number 90467-07201 (#3, in the picture), there's a couple slightly bigger, at the rear, part number 90467-09227 (#5) (on mine at least, those have grey caps, all the rest are black. It helps to mark where they go on the panel, with some sort of white marker pen or white-out.), and there's one "internal" fastener, at a plastic-to-plastic splice, part number 90467-07166 (#4).

I'm changing the oil every six months, and take the cover off each time, plus I've had it off maybe another half dozen times, for this and that. I think I've needed to replace one or two fasteners at most, I honestly can't recall.

But as David mentioned, washing them out really helps. Also, take care prying up the center caps. I use mostly a paint can opener, looks like this:

The hooked tip is very effective at levering the center cap up. If they're stubborn I'll use a small flat-tip screwdriver too, maybe in concert with the paint can opener. I'll also sometimes use a traditional trim fastener tool like this, under the whole collar mostly:

But the Toyota fasteners and this shield I find fairly easy, it goes very quick. There's also 6 bolts at the front (#2 in the picture) that need removal. I typically start from the rear, work my way to the front, remove the bolts last. Install is the reverse, and I often put a drop of oil on the bolts before reinstall.

Leave the bolts loose till all the fasteners are in, to help with aligment. Don't forget to tighten them last, lol. They are "shoulder bolts", torquing against the steel, but the wider shoulder holding the plastic gently. Don't go nuts when torquing them (especially oiled), maybe just one hand the ratchet wrench, near the center, or use some sort of screw driver for made for turning sockets (I've got to get one of those...).

When I plug those numbers in at McGeorge Toyota, they say that they do NOT fit my 2015 Prius. 90467-07215 does, but what about the other size? Is that 90467-10183? And in fact that TSB shows three different sizes; are there still three different sizes on the later ones?

Maybe they've revised the parts numbers??

#3 and #5 are the main ones, at least from my perspective: I always remove the whole panel. #4 is holding both ends of the splicer plate, at the split line of the "maintenance flap". Toyota never refers to it thus, and advises to remove the whole panel in the oil change instruction (in repair manual). Anyway, #5 there are two, they're larger, have grey centres, are at the back end of the panel. All the rest are #3.

Went to the local dealership today, and they plugged my VIN into their lookup system, which seemed to show only two different sizes of fastener: 90467-07215, which they had in stock (the car uses many of those); and 90467-07220, which they are ordering for me (the car uses only one of those).

There are different radiator spash shields depending on the year of the Prius. I am guessing that's why there are different clips. I think my 2012 takes 90467-07220 as well.

I should have been clearer: I was referring to the clips for the under-engine cover specifically: The 90467-07220 clips may be used in other areas of the car.
